Because you already have 4 GB of Ram installed, and it is always preferable to have matching pairs, you have a slight quandary, in that buying another 4 GB stick may not pair with the existing. 

Therefore I suggest you consider an 8 GB stick from either Crucial, Kingston or Mr Memory et al, there are links above, and replace the 4 GB, then if it boots and all is well, re-fit the 4 GB as a secondary giving 12 GB.

Personally I use Piriform Speccy to view details about my Memory, so you could post the output of that, it may help us to understand your dilemma.

i tried 3200 AA kingston ram and when i booted up the laptop the backlit keyboard came on for 2 seconds shut off but nothing posted on the screen so im thinking its the wrong ram it has a samsung 2133mhz in it now and it booted up fine but if i change the ram it won't boot at all

i think i got a ram slot that went bad
