new laptop defective?

Just took my new Inspiron 16 out of the box, did some basic setup installing updates, setting preferences and loading document files via One Drive installed Office365. Left is alone for a couple hours, came back and screen was blank with only my cursor displayed (wireless mouse), had to force shut down using power button. Powered it up this morning and screen remains blank, showing only the cursor??

Please can you confirm the Make Model and OS, along with any configuration details like touch screen, backlit keyboard, SFF or tower etc etc.

A hard reset is the most obvious suggestion.

Any chance of a piccy of the screen?

@anne_droid Thanks for your response - DELL Inspiron 16 Plus, Model# 7640, Windows 11 Pro. Backlit keyboard is operational - on startup, there is a quick flash of the DELL logo on screen but then the screen goes completely dark except for the cursor. It was fully operational during my first session for a couple of hours, then it seemed to go into sleep mode and will not come out of it!

Did a hard reset - (unplug power, hold power button for 30 sec, plugged back in and hit power button). PC is on and updating BIOS now ....... updating firmware ........rebooting system ...... updating...... restarting ....... YEA, it is working again!! Thank you @anne_droid

Well you can consider the following:

  • Explorer (Windows desktop) failed to load
  • Graphics driver corrupted during first Windows Update
  • OneDrive / Office sign-in hang at startup
  • Windows fast startup + modern standby bug
  • Fix the graphics driver
  • Disable OneDrive auto-start
