Inspiron 15 3530, fan not responding properly after BIOS update 1.27.0

As the title says, after updating my Inspiron 15 3530 to BIOS version 1.27.0, the fan doesn't respond to changes in processor temperature. If you turn on the device cold, the fan will run at low power regardless of how hot the processor gets. If it gets too hot, it starts to freeze. When you restart the BIOS, you notice it's hot, and the fan starts working at maximum speed without reducing power. All of this started happening after the update. Downgrading is not possible due to the new 2023 certifications. There are no driver updates (I've already reinstalled some related to processor power management), and I've already restored the BIOS to factory settings.

When attempting to run diagnostics using the Dell Support Assistant, the diagnostic freezes at 90% and does not complete. Please release an update to fix this as soon as possible; it is a critical vulnerability.

Hi everyone,

Dell has released a new BIOS version 1.30.0 that addresses an issue where the system fan may not operate correctly after a previous BIOS update.

Please install this BIOS update and let us know if it resolves the issue on your system.

Compatible systems:

  • Inspiron 15 3530
  • Vostro 14 3430
  • Vostro 15 3530

Your feedback is important and helps other users facing the same problem.

* Some users reported that downgrading the BIOS resolved the issue. If that does not fix it for you, then follow the steps below:

* Contact support via Get Help Now on right. This must be done to create a Dell case tied to the unique computer Service Tag number. For this specific issue, out of warranty customers will be assisted by the GHN technical support team.

* Push through the GHN AI questions until it sends you to a GHN agent.

* Once connected to the GHN agent, explain the issues you faced after installing BIOS 1.27.0/1.29.0. Ask the GHN agent to look up Dell article 000423130.

@549996057559 So, I contacted Dell support, and the representative had the audacity to say that I installed the wrong BIOS, and that for this model the BIOS is 1.24.1, even though the new BIOS 1.27.0 is listed on the Dell website and I received the update through Dell Commander. They asked me to wait 48 hours for advanced support to try to provide a BIOS downgrade. The most bizarre thing is that they block the downgrade; in cases of failures like this, you're simply held hostage, risking damage to your equipment. Without a doubt, I will never own another Dell in my life.

@DELL-ChrisM2

This is where the update was installed. In other words, it was delivered by a Dell service. And as it appears, the BIOS is published on the Dell portal for this model. You shouldn't have downgrade restrictions; when a serious problem like this occurs, we are unable to fix it. It would be easily solved if we could downgrade. I don't know how long I'll have to live with my notebook having a fan that won't adjust its power.

Dell support is incredibly bad; I had to contact them because I received no response. They asked me to perform dozens of tests and in the end replied that they couldn't identify any problem. Basically, in the end I had to record a video showing that the fan doesn't adjust to the temperature, because Dell's synthetic tests and data collection only showed that the fan works. They refuse to send the case to engineering or provide me with a BIOS with the downgrade key available. Until then, I'm risking damaging the equipment.

This is simply absurd. I even sent two videos showing that the fan doesn't adjust its speed. In one of the videos, the fan was practically off, and even after a processor stress test, it didn't increase its speed, and no noise was identified in the video. In the second video, the fan was at maximum speed and didn't reduce even under light use. The response from Dell's terrible and incompetent support is that the machine is operating normally.

@user_c50fb1 I’ve been dealing with fan management issues for a week now. Dell pulled the BIOS update from their site, but those of us who already installed it. I got the update through Dell's own software, and they still haven't provided a fix. I’ve never seen a company this incompetent.

No, Dell hasn't released a BIOS update yet; they just pulled the buggy one from the portal. And apparently, they aren't very committed to fixing the issue. I’m never installing a BIOS update right at launch again. I’ll only install one when I have a guaranteed downgrade path.

@DELL-ChrisM2 Is there still no official word on this? Dell pulled the BIOS from the portal on the 22nd and we still don't have a fix? This is a serious overheating issue, as seen in many other reports in this thread, and Dell hasn’t said a word about fixing it. This is absurd.

That software is for system recovery, OS failures, or BIOS corruption, which isn't the case here. The BIOS isn't corrupted; it was released with a bug in the Embedded Controller (EC) that broke real-time communication. If you were paying attention during the install, the EC was updated, and that’s exactly where the problem started. No software update or Intel thermal drivers will fix this—only a new BIOS will.

@user_f4e244 Dell is replacing my motherboard. An on-site technician is coming to my place to swap it for a board running BIOS 1.24.1. There’s a high chance the tech will get here before Dell even releases an official update on their site. It’s bizarre—I’m never buying a Dell product again. This policy of blocking BIOS downgrades is incredibly stupid.

The developers are already working on it, but knowing Dell it won't be ready anytime soon.

I got a bit luckier—the technician is coming to my house as soon as the motherboard arrives to do the replacement. It’s not what I expected, since a BIOS fix would definitely solve the problem, but it doesn't look like Dell will release a patch anytime soon given the incompetence of their engineering team. I’ll gladly take the new mobo.

@P3rseus

Dell's engineering team is terrible. I bitterly regret switching from Samsung. I'm never buying a Dell again in my life.
