Inspiron 14 7420 2 in 1, sound issue

When I connect a headset via 3.5mm jack, the laptop takes 60 seconds to switch audio from laptop speakers to headset. I have updated windows and drivers they are all the latest. What is the problem with this laptop? It's brand new out of the box.

Hi all,

The new driver is now available for download: Realtek High Definition Audio Driver

Please install and let us know if that fixed the issue described on this topic.

Thanks!

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing sound issues with your Dell Inspiron 14 7420 2-in-1 laptop. Sound problems can be caused by a variety of factors, and I'll provide you with some troubleshooting steps to help you resolve the issue. Please follow these steps:

  1. Check the Volume:

    • Make sure the volume is turned up on your laptop. You can do this by clicking on the speaker icon in the system tray and adjusting the volume slider.
  2. Mute Function:

    • Ensure that the laptop is not muted. Sometimes, accidental key presses can mute the sound.
  3. Audio Output Device:

    • Verify that the correct audio output device is selected. Right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray, select "Open Sound settings," and make sure the correct output device (e.g., speakers or headphones) is chosen.
  4. Driver Update:

    • Outdated or corrupt audio drivers can cause sound problems. Visit Dell's official website and download the latest audio drivers for your laptop model. Install them and restart your laptop.
  5. Windows Update:

    • Ensure that Windows is up to date. Sometimes, Windows updates include bug fixes for sound-related issues.
  6. Audio Troubleshooter:

    • Windows has a built-in audio troubleshooter that can help identify and fix sound problems. To access it, right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray, select "Troubleshoot sound problems," and follow the on-screen instructions.
  7. Check for Physical Issues:

    • Examine your laptop's physical audio components. Ensure that there are no loose cables, and check the audio port for any debris or damage.
  8. Software Conflicts:

    • Sometimes, third-party applications can interfere with sound. Try disabling or uninstalling any recently installed software to see if it resolves the issue.
  9. System Restore:

    • If the sound issue started after a recent change or update, consider using System Restore to revert your system to a state where sound was working correctly.
  10. BIOS Update:

    • Check if there is a BIOS update available for your laptop on Dell's website. Sometimes, BIOS updates can resolve hardware-related issues.
  11. Contact Dell Support:

    • If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it's possible that there is a hardware problem with your laptop's audio components. In that case, you may need to contact Dell's customer support or visit a service center for further assistance or hardware inspection.

Remember to back up your important data before performing any major updates or system changes. Additionally, if your laptop is under warranty, contacting Dell support should be a priority, as they can provide specialized assistance and potential hardware repairs.

Hi all,

For those experiencing audio issues, a temporary fix is available.

Downgrade your audio driver to version 6.0.9418.1, A19 by simply downloading the file (it will uninstall the newer version first, reboot and then install the version 6.0.9418.1, A19).

The long term fix is a new driver that should be released in December.
