Inspiron 14 5440 USB Charging

Inspiron 14 5440

Inspiron 14 5440

Just received my new Inspiron 14 5440 and I have to say I'm impressed with the machine. However I can't find a clear answer to whether or not I can use a 65W Dell USB C charger to power the laptop. It comes with a barrel type charger but I also have a Dell USB charger, from one of my other machines. Can this be used to power the laptop via the USB C Port?

Many thanks

If the system has the USB-C port, it will charge over USB-C (there is a 5440 without the USB-C port that cannot).

It depends on the CPU you have.  From the manual:

USB ports
for computer shipped with 1305U/1334U/1335U processors
  • Two USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps) ports
  • One USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps) Type-C port (Data only)
for computer shipped with 120U/150U processors
  • Two USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps) ports
  • One USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) Type-C with Power Delivery and DisplayPort™ 1.4 port

@ejn63 Thanks, mine does but the manual says Power Sharing only, I asked

in support chat and they said it would be ok to power the laptop from the USB port.

You're absolutely right I have 1334U version which is Data only. Which is NOT the advice I got from Dell Support. They told me it supported USB Power using a Dell Charger.

Again , Thanks for responding.

So, what did it turn out like in the end? Were you able to turn it on and charge the battery via the Type-C connector? I don't like the barrel connector with the small pin :(

Hi

I did get a straight answer in the end for computer shipped with 1305U/1334U/1335U processors

  • Two USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps) ports
  • One USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps) Type-C port (Data only)

So my machine does NOT have usb c power capability. This was not the answer initially given by the Dell support tech on line, I had to ask the question again to a different Dell technician
