G15 5520, battery draining so fast

I'm using the Dell G15 5520 i5 version laptop and it's battery is draining so fast. I'm only getting 1-1.5 hour, and I'm just watching a movie or YouTube. And still I'm only getting around 1-1.5 hr on battery. I'm using it in battery saving mode and low brightness. Do I have to do anything with the Nvidia graphics card? If so how do I do it? Is there anything with the BIOS? Or anything other updates?

Hi everyone,

The new BIOS version 1.31.0 is now available. Please install it and let us know the outcome.

Thank you for your patience.

Yes, the nVidia GPU will rapidly drain the battery.  That said, this system is 2-3 years old and if it was running longer on battery when new, it's also likely the battery is on a slide toward needing replacement.  You can check the remaining battery capacity by running powercfg /batteryreport at a command prompt with admin privilege.

Thank you. I checked the battery report and it says the full charge capacity as of today is 42,511 mWh and the Design capacity is 54,880 mWh.

Is this good or bad? Is it time for replacement?Is this the reason the battery draining is so high?

Also, Current estimate of battery life based on all observed drains since OS Install, at full charge shows 3hr48min but I'm NOT getting that much backup

The battery has lost about 25% of its capacity, which is within reason for a 2-3 year old battery.  Did you recently reinstall the OS, and if you did, did you install the drivers (particularly the power management software)?

It is within reason you might not see three hours from a charge with the nVidia GPU enabled -- and if the system has a high resolution screen, you migth see much less than that.  What do you see if you run on the integrated GPU only?

@ejn63 i haven't reinstalled the OS recently.

I disabled the dedicated Nivida GPU and it still shows estimated time remaining of 1 hour 13 min for a 80% charge.

@pluto10 I advise not using your laptop without plugging in until Dell releases updated BIOS 1.31 which SHOULD fix the issue.

If you keep using without power it might keep draining further :(

We can't even revert to older BIOS due to Dell not allowing it.

@pluto10 honestly no idea.

I have tagged them repeatedly in the OG thread conversation but  it has been days since any official or community contributor replied.

Still maybe expect it in February.

@shoob hopefully it'll be released soon and more so it would fix this battery issue.. it's just so annoying to lose 90% in just like 1hr :(

@pluto10 ikr but I don't have my hopes up as no one is replying in the thread even after repeatedly tagging. Dell just ghosted us.

Hi everyone,

The Dell Engineering team is aware of this problem and is working to resolve it. They plan to release a new BIOS update (version 1.31.0) on March 11, 2025. (Compared to Versions 1.29.0 and 1.30.0, the updated BIOS improves performance and decreases the power consumption seen in idle states.)

@DELL-Nat M waiting for a solution, it's horrible. Even when fully charged it lasts for no more than 1 hour and 30 minutes if hardly used...

I have been experiencing the same battery drainage issue since January 18, 2025, after updating to the latest BIOS. Despite reporting the problem to both the service center and customer support, they have been unable to provide a resolution or any insights on how to address it. As of now, the issue remains unresolved. Please help me to provide the solution as fast as possible.
