Dell G15 5520 Heating and Stuttering Issues After BIOS Updates (v1.29.0 & v1.30.0)

Dear Community and Dell Support Team,

I am reaching out to express my frustration with my Dell G15 5520 laptop following the recent BIOS update to v1.29.0. Since the update, I have been experiencing significant overheating and performance stuttering, both during idle periods or normal usage and while gaming. Prior to the update, the laptop was functioning smoothly with BIOS version v1.28.0.

Initially, I suspected a virus as the cause of these issues, prompting me to run a full Windows Defender scan. However, during the scan, I noticed my CPU temperature spiked to an alarming 99°C, which is far above normal operating temperatures.

Dell released BIOS version v1.30.0 just few days ago, and I was hopeful it might resolve the heating and performance issues. Regrettably, the update has not had any effect on the problems I am facing.

What has been particularly frustrating is Dell's policy preventing users from rolling back to the previous stable BIOS version (v1.28.0), citing "security concerns" as the reason. This restriction has left me with no viable solution to restore my system’s functionality.

Has anyone in this community experienced similar issues with the G15 5520 or found any workarounds? Dell, if you are reading this, I kindly urge you to either provide users with the option to roll back to the last stable BIOS version or address these critical heating and performance issues ASAP.

Any advice, suggestions, or potential solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help.

It seems no one @ Dell cares. People have been screaming about it for weeks.

My laptop is ruined, at least allow us to downgrade to 1.28!

I don't think I'll buy a Dell laptop again, and I say this as a 20+ year Dell user, I'm so frustrated.

@Rocky_Bhai_8008 I can't play most games, maybe only in lowest settings and they still freeze or crash. I can't run most Adobe software without a BSOD. My temps go above 90 degrees, and my idle temps are already over 60 since the BIOS version 1.29 FORCEFULLY INSTALLED ITSELF.

@ldsdphn Aren’t you using the G-key to boost performance?

Before, I could use my laptop normally, and when gaming, I’d activate the G-key to enhance performance and cool it down. But now, I have to keep the G-key on all the time, and the noise is really annoying.

I hope they resolve the issue ASAP, it has already been more than a month now. SMH.

I only use my machine for Office products and personal financial software.  I keep it well tuned with Norton products.  It is becoming almost unusable with long freezes and a mouse jumping.

Same problem here.  Laptop was running fine and I upgraded firmware to 1.30.0 and now it is heating up even with simple browsing.

@rajeevskurup Same man. My laptop is idling at 55-60°C and reaches 85-90°C when doing simple tasks. The battery's full charge capacity has dropped from 44,620 mWh to 35,853 mWh in just 9 days!!! These dell people are not helping us at all.

If you're from India, then go and register on the NCH Portal. More grievances registered there will lead them to take this matter seriously and provide a viable solution.

@MDBPE Fortunately, I'm not experiencing any freezes or mouse jumping problems.

  • What are your current idle temperatures compared to before?

  • Additionally, how long does your battery last from 100% to 0% now, and how long did it last before the BIOS update?

@Rocky_Bhai_8008

Same here, "idling at 55-60°C and reaches 85-90°C when doing simple tasks".  I am not sure what it was before, I am thinking 35-45C.

I do not run on battery much, so I don't have a good feel for a reduction, but I was surprised that my battery ran down so much after the 1.30 update, I guess I did not put it together that may have been the issue.

I had Windows 11 update, and things got a little better, but the poor performance is hindering my productivity.

I tried many times, many ways and I just can't do BIOS downgrade. Dell said that I'll be able to downgrade to 1.28 or 1.29, but when I try, all "goes well" in Windows but when the notebook restarts, nothing changes (downgrade is enable in BIOS). Looking forward to this new BIOS version asap...

@itsnota2ma thanks! already downloaded and tried to upgrade but no success, all steps are done but after the notebook restarts it bypasses the logo screen and MS Windows comes up. Checking BIOS version and still on 1.30......
