Can't install Linux, NO AHCI mode in BIOS

Inspiron 16 7630 2-in-1

Inspiron 16 7630 2-in-1

Hi,

I purchased this laptop a couple of weeks ago. I like to make it dual boot with Linux Mint. Internet says that I need to change SATA to AHCI in BIOS and disable the secure boot. I disabled the secure boot but there is no option for AHCI.

I tried to boot a live Linux Mint USB. It only boots in compatibility mode. However, when I tried to install Linux, it couldn't find the ssd where it was supposed to be installed.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks.

@ejn63 OK, Ubuntu is installed flawlessly, wonderful. I was so frustrated. Although I liked Linux Mint but no problem.

Fedora is supposed to be using cutting-edge kernel and other software.  But I couldn't install Fedora either.

Thanks for your suggestions.

AHCI support in newer systems is starting to be phased out -- you have two options:  a different model system that still has an AHCI option (Latitude and other models still do), or a Linux distribution with support for Intel RAID (IRST).

@ejn63 Is it possible to create another partition (using GParted) on SSD and install Linux in it?

Only if whatever system you has, has support for IRST -- otherwise, the installer isn't going to see the drive at all.

Your best shot at a linux distro with IRST support is likely ubuntu.

I wouldn't give up on Mint if it's your preference -- as fewer and fewer new systems have AHCI support (Intel plans to retire it), the other distributions will be forced to integrate IRST support.
