If it's the original battery it's about 13-14 years old and well past its lifespan.

If it's a newly purchased battery, contact the seller -- there's no way it's OEM, but they presumably back it with some sort of warranty.

Also check setup (F2 at powerup) to verify that the AC adapter is recognized -- if it is not, the battery will not charge.

If your Dell computer is displaying an error message stating "Battery Not Identified" or if the battery is not being recognized by the system, there are a few possible causes and troubleshooting steps you can try:

1. Verify Battery Connection: Ensure that the battery is properly connected to the computer. Turn off the computer, remove the battery, and then reinsert it, making sure it is securely seated in the battery compartment.

2. Clean Battery Contacts: Over time, dirt or corrosion can accumulate on the battery contacts, leading to connection issues. Use a soft, dry cloth or an eraser to gently clean the metal contacts on both the battery and the computer.

3. Update BIOS and Drivers: Outdated BIOS firmware or battery-related drivers can cause compatibility issues. Visit Dell's official support website, enter your computer's model number, and download the latest BIOS and driver updates available for your specific model. Install the updates and restart your computer.

4. Run Battery Diagnostic Test: Dell computers typically have built-in battery diagnostic tools. Restart your computer and, during the startup process, look for a key combination (e.g., F12 or F10) mentioned on the screen to access the diagnostics. Run a battery diagnostic test to check for any hardware-related issues with the battery. Note that not all Dell models have this feature.

5. Perform a Power Reset: Shut down the computer, disconnect the power cord, and remove the battery (if removable). Press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power. Then reconnect the power cord (without the battery) and try powering on the computer. If it starts up, shut it down again, reinsert the battery, and try powering on once more.

6. Test with a Different Battery: If possible, try using a different compatible battery in your Dell computer. This can help determine if the issue is with the battery itself or with the computer's battery recognition system. If the different battery is recognized, it may indicate a faulty or incompatible battery that needs to be replaced.

7. Contact Dell Technical Support: If the above steps do not resolve the issue, it is recommended to contact Dell's technical support for further assistance. They can provide additional guidance, perform remote diagnostics, or arrange for repairs if needed.

It's worth noting that if your computer is still under warranty, Dell's technical support should be able to assist you with battery-related issues.

If you are encountering the "Battery Not Identified" error on your Dell computer, it indicates that the system is unable to recognize or communicate with the battery properly. Here are some additional troubleshooting steps you can try:

1. Check Battery Health: Use Dell's built-in battery diagnostic tool or a third-party battery monitoring software to check the health status of the battery. It can provide information on the battery's charge capacity and overall condition. If the battery health is significantly degraded, it may need to be replaced.

2. Clean Battery Contacts: As mentioned before, ensure that the battery contacts are clean and free from dirt or corrosion. Use a soft cloth or an eraser to gently clean the metal contacts on both the battery and the computer. This helps establish a proper connection.

3. Reset BIOS Settings: Access the BIOS settings by restarting your computer and pressing the appropriate key (e.g., F2 or Del) during startup. Once in the BIOS, navigate to the Power or Battery section and look for options related to battery detection or reset. Try resetting the BIOS settings to default and save the changes. Restart the computer and check if the battery is recognized.

4. Update BIOS: Outdated BIOS firmware can cause compatibility issues with the battery. Visit Dell's official support website, enter your computer's model number, and download the latest BIOS update available for your specific model. Follow the provided instructions to update the BIOS, and then restart your computer. After the update, check if the battery is detected.

5. Remove and Reinstall Battery Driver: Go to the Device Manager on your computer (you can access it by right-clicking the Start button and selecting Device Manager). Expand the "Batteries" category, right-click on the battery driver, and choose "Uninstall device." After uninstalling, restart your computer. Windows will automatically reinstall the battery driver. Check if the battery is now identified.

6. Test with Another Battery (if available): If possible, try using a different compatible battery in your Dell computer. This will help determine if the issue lies with the battery itself or the computer's battery recognition system. If the different battery is recognized, it may indicate a faulty or incompatible battery that needs replacement.

7. Contact Dell Support: If the issue persists after trying the above steps, it is recommended to reach out to Dell's technical support for further assistance. They can provide more specific guidance and potentially arrange for repairs or battery replacements if necessary.

Remember to exercise caution when working with computer hardware and, if needed, seek professional assistance to avoid causing further damage.
