Studio XPS 8100, motherboard upgrade
Hi This is probably a exercise in frutility but here goes. I have a Studio 8011 with a I7 870 & 2.93 cpu. Motherboard number 063hr7.
Since Dell motherboards are somewhat propietary, what motherboard could I get to update this computer to be able to use Windows 11? Mine will not run the 25 upgrade. I just hate to throw away a computer that works fine otherwise.
Thanks in advance

Re: what motherboard could I get to update this computer
the cpu in 8100 with LGA1156 socket is too old and slow. A cheap upgrade is to replace with XPS 8700, 8500, or even 8300 mobo which has same microATX form factor as 8100, can use same ddr3 memory, cpu cooler and psu.
cpu are 4th,3rd,2nd gen for these boards which are better than i7 870.
Still none of these officially support Win 11 but you can bypass and install Win 11 off label.

There isn't a board you can use with that case. You likely can still install Windows 11 by bypassing the CPU and TPM checks though, at least in the short term.
Given the high cost of components now, the memory will likely be among if not the highest cost in the upgrade, and there is no way you can carry the existing RAM forward to a new system or board.

@redxps630 Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated. Thats the info I needed. I would assume the 8700 4 th generation would be my smartest choice

The XPS 8700 board w i7-4790 or 4770 and 16GB DDR3 ram plus mSATA or 2.5” SSD is still a decent system in 2026 for general office work. It feels no different from i7-6700 or i7-7700. It is not as fast as i7-8700.
I have also done Inspiron 3847 board with i7-4770 swap into older Dell case. So if you cannot get 8700, consider 3847, which has same mATX board too. The one downside of 3847 is two DIMM slots whereas all XPS have four.
