New Inspiron will not turn off

Hi I have a new Inspiron 3891-- works well, except tonight it will not turn off for the first time.  I go through the regular motions-- standard power off-- it seems to initially go off (the screen goes black)-- but I noticed the tower on-off button was still on.-seconds later-- the audio  "music" and the  screen saver/sign in line appears-- tried several times tonight-- but still does of turn off... nd all I was doing was looking at the internet--it, no "work to save" or "updates" or anything else....oh,

 Thanks, shipman

We all start out as novices. You can't learn if you don't ask questions when you don't understand something.

Has the problem recurred? Did you try pressing/holding the power button method I mentioned above? Did that solve the problem?

Routers and modems are different so important to know exactly what you have. Got its model number?

A router creates a home network for both Ethernet and WiFi devices. It manages and splits the internet connection so multiple devices can use the internet at the same time. The router can't encode/decode the signals sent to or coming from your ISP so it doesn't connect directly to the internet.

A modem has to encode/decode the signals to/from the IPS. Routers and modems can be 2 separate little boxes with a cable between them or can be combined into one single box.

Where do those 2 yellow cables go? Is one plugged into the Ethernet port (#6) on back of this PC and the other one plugged into a different PC, to a wall outlet or somewhere else?

Reboot PC and start tapping F2 when you see the Dell splash screen. That should open BIOS setup. Mouse may -or not- work in BIOS setup. If not, use tab and arrow keys to navigate.  Look for a "System Management" tab, or possibly an "Advanced" tab, and see if you can find the Wake on LAN option. Use arrow keys to highlight it and press Enter. That should show you the Enable/Disable options. If Enabled, change that to disabled and press Enter.

Whether you have to change that setting or not, when you're done, press Esc to leave the tab and navigate to the Exit tab. If you changed the Wake setting, choose the option to save the change and exit. If you didn't change the Wake setting, choose the option to leave without saving any changes. PC will reboot itself automatically.

NOTE: Don't change any other options in BIOS setup. If you think you made a mistake, choose the option to exit without saving any changes.

Has it done this more than that one night?

Try this:

  1. Power off
  2. Unplug power cord from rear of PC
  3. Press/hold power button on PC for ~30 sec
  4. Reconnect power cord to rear of PC
  5. Power on and use normally, monitoring to see if it shuts off properly

Note: If it won't power fully off at #1, just start with #2

If the problem persists and you use a power strip or uninterruptible power supply, remove those and see if that helps. And/or contact Dell Tech Support for assistance.

BTW: Never post your Service Tag in an open forum like this. Treat your Service Tag as personal, private info and only share it Dell-Cares, if/when they ask for it, and only via a Private Message through this forum.

Hi Ron,

and my real name is Eric.  Thanks--I'll give it a try in a day or two----- the household has been in a bit of turmoil-- my wife's father, who lived with us, passed away, and it was traumatic to say the least--I only mention this in connection to the service tag, etc--I wasn't fully thinking about its importance-----and I am still relatively new to this forum again, warmest thanks to you-- OH--  probably is not a factor, but just by coincidence, in addition to the new Inspiron 3891, I got a new modem--

Sorry to hear about your loss...

New modem or new router? If this problem started after you got a new modem or router, it might be related. Check in BIOS setup to make sure Wake on LAN/WLAN is not enabled. If that's enabled, PC might be seeing a signal from the new modem or router telling it to (re)boot.

And also look at the Properties screen for the network adapter (are you using Ethernet or WiFi?) in Device Manager to see if there are settings allowing it to wake the PC and disable them too.

If that doesn't help, and if possible, try using the old modem or router for a while and see if the problem persists...

Otherwise, contact Dell Tech Support if the problem persists...

Hi Ron,

Much appreciated.  For the record, I'm afraid I'm not much of a "techie" so I barely know what you are talking about.. The new device is a new Modem,  ATT U-verse I assume I have ethernet, there are two yellow plug-ins that have cables (2 cables)  and it's labeled "ethernet...

Where can I find  WAKE on LAN/WILAN, and once found, is it clear how to disable same?  again, I am a novice on such things--

thanks

Eric - I see you marked my post as the Solution (thank you!).

Would be helpful if you shared what you actually did that solved the problem so others can learn from you...
