Iris XE Graphics Driver Updates fail on Inspiron 5400 AIO
The latest Dell driver (NP8CG_WIN64_31.0.101.4575_A09.EXE) for the Inspiron 5400 AIO on the Support site works fine.
However, there have been lots of Intel updates (31.0.101.5084, 31.0.101.5085, 31.0.101.5186) since July 2023 and none of them work.
If you install any of them you get a 0xC00000E5 error.
You then need to roll back the driver to 31.0.101.4575.
Most of the Intel driver updates are performance and gaming related....but someone might want to update to the latest version, so not sure why it fails to work on the Inspiron 5400 AIO.

An update (and some progress).
I've managed to update the Iris XE Graphics driver on my Inspiron 5400 AIO.
I was unable to get any of the Intel updates (since 31.0.101.4575 from July 2023) to install and run, right up until 31.0.101.5333 in February 2024.
The video driver on the Dell site is still 31.0.101.4575.
However, Intel have issued 31.0.101.5382 and that works.
I downloaded gfx_win_101.5382.exe from the Intel website, unpacked and ran it, and just selected a driver install (i.e. I didn't bother to install Arc Control).
I can see that '5382' is 'working properly' in Device Manager, with a driver date of the 27th March 2024.
Hopefully going forward any new Iris XE Graphics driver updates will also work.🤞

Try disabling any and all anti-virus software before installing that driver. Also keep in mind that Dell optimizes drivers for their hardware (and also may do the same with the hardware) and that may also be a source of the problem. It may be that the Intel supplied drivers do not recognize the GPU properly.

@JOcean Hi JOcean, I don't think it's an anti-virus issue. I use DriverEasy to keep the drivers up to date (reasonably priced and does what it says on the tin), it updates the Intel Iris XE driver ok, but it then fails on start-up. I agree with you about the GPU recognition, I think Dell need to provide a customised version, but in fairness Intel spew out minor updates to the graphics driver every fortnight or so....I guess Dell just provide an optimized version of a particular update when they have time to do one.

Virtually all of the Iris Xe updates are game related and for performance.
The day I need Intel® Game On Driver support for 'Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League' or worry myself to a frazzle about the 'Up to 13% average FPS uplift at 1080p with Ultra High settings' for Assassin’s Creed Syndicate (DX11)......I'll pop down to the shops for a water cooling kit and a super-d-dooper blue led lighting kit....then update the graphics driver.😉

@NickVegas - For starters, try this:
See if that fixes the problem...

@RoHe Hi Ron, I tried the above.
Chkdsk didn't pick up anything that it couldn't fix (and didn't pick up much).
DISM found nothing.
Sfc picked up a few corrupted Bluetooth drivers and fixed them.
I rebooted the AIO.
The Intel Wireless Bluetooth drivers are the latest version, but they can sometimes (believe it or not) get corrupted by GPU driver installs, I thought that might be relevant (but alas it wasn't).
I then downloaded the latest Iris Xe driver ('5186') from the Intel Drivers & Support site (gfx_win_101.5186_101.5234.exe, dated 18th January 2024) and installed it.
After a reboot it still failed to start, so I ran the Intel Driver & Support Assistant.
It detected that 31.0.101.5186 was installed (as expected) and that it was 'Offline' (i.e. it hadn't started successfully).
It had the following warning:
A customized computer manufacturer driver is installed on your computer. The Intel Driver & Support Assistant is not able to update the driver. Installing a generic Intel driver instead of the customized computer manufacturer driver may cause technical issues. Contact Dell for the latest driver for your computer.
So, as I suspected the latest version (31.0.101.4575) on the Dell Support site appears to be a customised version (and is the only version that works).
I'll need to continue running the Dell '4575' version until Dell customise a version of '5186' (or later) that will install and run on the Inspiron 5400 AIO.
Thanks, Nick.

@NickVegas - Sounds like you solved the problem. Don't know if that Intel driver from the Dell site is "customized" or if they just tested it for compatibility with your PC model...
Keep track of the Intel video driver that's installed because Windows Update may install a different version when you're not looking...

@RoHe Hi Ron,
It's a fair point, I don't know for sure that Dell customised it.
I'd have to see if I could download the Intel version of '4575' from their support site and then use that version (instead of the Dell support site version) to test it.
At that point (if it ran ok) it would be an Intel issue rather than Dell.
However, I'm not sure I can be bothered!
I agree, with auto-updating you can never be sure that it didn't get updated at 3am without you knowing.
I'll keep a check on it.....

Glad you were able to get 5382 to work. Intel must have fixed their "oopsy" with this version.
But why did you "unpack it"? All you should have to do is double-click the .exe file and it should run directly...

Hi Ron,
Sorry, yes I just ran the .exe, but it extracts (unpacks) as it runs.
Agreed, I guess it was an Intel issue, I'd done similar with '5186' without success.
Intel says that a 'normal' update should retain any OEM customisation, so you don't want to tick the 'completely re-install' box on their install GUI.
Cheers,
Nick.

Bottom line: If it ain't broke, don't break it...especially with unnecessary updates.
