Specs say it can use a 6th Gen i3, i5, or i7.

I'd make sure the latest version of BIOS is installed and working with the i3 before swapping in the new CPU.

Have a tube of decent thermal paste handy, and gently clean the old paste off the bottom of the heat sink.

Dell Inspiron 3650 Motherboard 0C2XKD

the I3 6100 would be a downgrade as its only 2 cores

Post the exact PC model number. The motherboard's part number isn't useful...

I want to swap the i3 6100 out and install the i5 6500 I was wondering if it would work and if it would be as simple as just taking out the i3 6100 and replacing it with the i5 6500 I described

Hi Ron,

I am happy to report the upgrade went very well less than 15 minutes. I disconnected the power and removed the i3 6100 early this morning to let the RAM dissipate I don't know if it makes a difference. It seemed like it hit a glitch when I turned it back on, I did a restart and everything is fine.

Thanks again
