Inspiron 660 not booting after interrupted cloning of hdd to ssd

Inspiron 660

Inspiron 660

I began cloning my hdd to a new Crucial ssd using Acronis True Image. It reached the point where the hdd was locked and I lost power. Noww it won’t boot. I don’t have installation media for the original OS Windows 8. I have a Windows XP CD from an old Dell but my Inspiron doesn’t even try to boot from the CD. I do have a laptop that I cold use to download Windows and make a bootable usb flash drive. Any ideas.

Actually, I accidentally turned off the PC power once the hdd was locked. When I turned it back on it showed an error message. I was able to use Microsoft Media Creator on my laptop to create a Windows 10 bootable USB thumb drive and reinstall Windows 10 on the Inspiron desktop. I plan to backup the hdd to a USB thumb drive before I clone the hdd to the ssd.

918 GB HDD with 617 GB free, so a 512 GB USB flash drive will be big enough.

Does "lost power" mean there was a power failure in your house/neighborhood, or did only the PC lose power, possibly indicating that the PSU failed?

Do you see anything (eg, Dell logo) on the monitor, or get any error messages when it won't boot?

What color is power button on PC and steady or blinking when it won't boot?

Did you try disconnecting the new SSD?

When was last time you replaced the motherboard battery (CR2032 coin cell, ~$2)? You might start with that, if nothing else than to rule the battery out. See page 77 in Service Manual.

If the battery was weak when you lost power, BIOS settings may have gotten scrambled which could prevent PC from booting.  So after you remove the old battery, press/hold power button on PC for~30 sec. Then install fresh battery and see if it boots now.

Is a "thumb drive" going to be big enough to back up contents of your HDD?

You may want/need to use a external USB HDD.
