Inspiron 5680, upgrading my 460 watt psu

My current rig has an insufficient battery (460 watts) even for a Dell Inspiron 5680. I was wondering if there were any larger power supply units available ( at least 700 watts) which are compatible with the Inspiron 5680?

Any good brand name standard 24/4 ATX psu would do. Dell has 850w oem psu for XPS/Aurora that can work in 5680 too

Any place I could get this on the cheap? Is the evga 700 gd a good fit, with the switch and outlet being on the left side?

700 GD ranks high on EVGA psu list

Is it possible to install upside down? So the outlet can be plugged in?

the mounting holes of standard ATX psu (not in a rectangle) only allow it being right side up to be installed.  but if you just let it sit loose at bottom of case without being mounted I suppose you can try.  You may need to leave power cord plugged in psu all the time that way b/c the psu would be loose.

Is the EVGA outlet blocked by Dell case plastic?

@redxps630 Most power supplies do

Not sure if the EVGA 700 GD is different

Dell has a poor case design to make back panel plastic unfriendly for psu upgrade by restricting plug positioning.  User had to cut panel to access plug of Corsair psu upgrade .

evga 700gd on/off switch may be blocked by Dell panel.  It is designed to be mountable either side up apparently.

Sounds like you got a modular PSU.  I thought they all came with the connecting cables.  Did you buy it new and what brand did you get?

Well, CPUMedics didn't indicate any cables come with the PSU, so you weren't shortchanged.  Do you need help finding the right cables?  @redxps630 would be one of the best ones to help you with that.

Yes, that would be really helpful to know the exact cables for this type of psu.

The Dell 850w and 1000w psu modular ATX psu uses a set of proprietary power cables which are color coded and labeled for factory worker to plug in easily on psu side, and they are all 6 pin connectors for R# sockets.  On motherboard side they are mostly standard connectors.  The 24 pin socket is standard.  The Dell psu proprietary cable set for the most part can be used on any standard motherboard including Inspiron
