Inspiron 5680 display ports query - help please

Hi all,

Does anyone know if the Dell Inspiron 5680 supports video output over its USB-C front port please?

My setup for work is an Inspiron 5680 with an i7-8700 and a RTX 2060, but I have a multi-monitor setup using all the RTX 2060's ports already.

I'm looking to also add a graphics tablet using HDMI - without needing to unplug one of the monitors if possible?

The other option I thought to try this week was using the HDMI port from the motherboard, however upon checking the BIOS I can't see any option to enable both onboard and discreet graphics at the same time. (But after checking the i7-8700 specs it does support onboard graphics.)

Thank you in advance for any assistance or suggestions to make this possible.

Reboot and start tapping F2 when you see the Dell splash screen. That should open BIOS setup. Use the tab and arrow keys to navigate around, if mouse doesn't work in BIOS setup. Look for an option for Multi-Monitor (aka: Multi-Display) support. If it's available, enable that option.

If that option is available, look for a second option to set Primary Display and set it to NVidia. Don't change anything else in setup, but save the change(s) and exit setup.  PC will reboot automatically when you exit setup

NOTE: Unfortunately, the online Service Manual doesn't list the BIOS setup options, so I don't know if either/both of these options are actually available on this PC model.

If not available, you could always use a standard USB3>DisplayPort or USB3>HDMI dongle for that extra monitor. Just make sure the dongle supports your version of Windows and the "recommended" (aka: "native") resolution of the monitor to be attached to the dongle.

You cannot use the hdmi on the integrated video unless you physically remove the discrete video card.

Hi Mary G,

Thank you for your message, unfortunately we just found this out this afternoon.

Just in case this info helps anyone else in the future.

A friend came over this afternoon with all the cables needed.

1st. We tried the USB-C port - we didn't have any joy with this as it didn't output video for us sadly. (Maybe it was the cables, maybe this computer doesn't support video over USB-C, unsure.)

2nd. We tried plugging in a Display Port cable into the back of the motherboard - whereupon the new monitor came on along with the others plugged into the GPU!

However rather than allowing you to utilise the motherboard port, the onboard graphics & the discrete GPU all at the same time - the computer informs you with a large onscreen message "that you should just use the discrete graphics card instead".

We couldn't find a way to get past this message (does anyone know if you can get past this message or remove this message?), which is a shame as I'd sooner have the use of another display port and the onboard graphics then - "a large onscreen message".

Anyway, hope this helps someone else maybe or saves time.

If anyone has any other suggestions (other than a new GPU with more ports, which would be the dream if prices come down) would very much appreciate it.

Hi Ron,

Many thanks for your message.

Just had another look at the BIOS, but unfortunately cannot see any of these options. The Inspiron 5680 BIOS seems very limited in that it hardly has any options at all, compared to other computers.

However, appreciate the suggestion of a USB 3.0 to HDMI adapter, I didn't even realise these were available and so going to go with this suggestion. Have started looking on Amazon for a Win 10 match, and resolution to match the graphics tablet.

Thank you once again for your help/suggestion, really appreciate it.

I thought I might have to pass up on adding a graphics tablet due to lack of ports, but pleased to know it's possible again.

Let's back up a minute, before you get too far...

Why would you need an HDMI port on the PC to connect a "graphics tablet"? Doesn't a graphics tablet use a standard USB cable to connect to a PC for inputting graphics data that gets displayed on either of your two existing monitors?

A USB3(PC)>HDMI dongle is going to send an HDMI signal to a tablet, not bring an HDMI signal from a tablet into the PC, so now I'm totally confused...

Hi Ron,

Many thanks for your message again.

I'm completely new to graphics tablets (been doing a lot of illustration work recently so thought it might help rather than using just a mouse.)

I think the standard graphics tablets use just a USB cable to connect, but the graphics tablets I've been looking at also have a screen.

The two I've been looking at recently are the-

XP-PEN Artist12 Pro Graphics Drawing Tablet 11.6" Full HD Display for Windows, Mac

XP-PEN Artist 12 (2nd Gen) Drawing Tablet with Screen, Graphics Pen Display with 11.6 Inches Full-laminated Screen, X3 Elite Stylus, Supports Windows, Mac OS, Android, Chrome OS and Linux (Green)

Which I think need both an HDMI and USB connection to use according to the description. However I'm totally new to graphics tablets so appreciate any advice when it comes to the connections these need.

Wasn't aware graphics tablets have HDMI ports like that nowadays.

So the tablet is going to use 2 USB ports (one is power-only), or 1 USB on PC and tablet's own power adapter, plus an HDMI port on PC, according to their site.

You could try using a USB3>HDMI dongle with the tablet, and connect both monitors to the video card.  Or connect one monitor to the dongle and the tablet directly to the HDMI port on the video card.  Just make sure the USB dongle supports your version of Windows and both the tablet's and monitor's "recommended" resolution, whichever way gives you best performance on all 3 screens.

FWIW, the Inspiron 5680 Service Manual says:
"Display port - Connect only for debug purposes."

That sounds like there's probably no way to remove the warning about using the video card ports, unless you remove the video card.

Post back and let us know how you get set up.

Hi Ron,

Many thanks for your message.

I think I'm going to try using the USB>HDMI adapter with the tablet, fingers crossed all works okay with the XP-Pen tablet.

I've added a couple of potential adapters to my Amazon and just going to double check they have the required resolution and Windows support as you mentioned.

Many thanks again for your assistance with this, very much appreciated.

Will definitely post back my results in the near future.
