Inspiron 3880 Graphics Card Upgrade (inquiry from a user)

A user asked me:

Hi,

I've read several of your blogs related to upgrading an Inspiron 3880 graphics card.  I just want to be sure that I understand everything correctly.

First, I need to upgrade the power supply.  When I called Dell, they said that the 200W and 260W power supplies were the only ones that were compatible.  I'm wondering if they meant that those were the only "Dell" power supplies that were compatible.

Second, I need a special 6-pin adapter specific to the motherboard.

Third, I need a graphics card.

Please set me straight.

Last, I would greatly appreciate recommendations for each - power supply, adapter, and graphics cards.  There are tons out there - I want to upgrade the CPU so that it can be a high performing gaming computer.

Any/all advice is greatly appreciated!

Dell advisor goes only by the book.  Community users have discussed higher power psu options for various Dell desktop models.  for example, my discussions Dell 360w thin form factor psu compiled list - Dell Community

current 360w psu on sale options:

8HKG7 360W Liteon Gold (sold out again, but check later again)

19YR3 Chicony Gold

Dell 360w psu upgrade for 6pin+4pin desktop (Optiplex Inspiron Vostro) - Dell Community

3880 is on the compatible list for this upgrade.

The graphics cards you can use for this 360w PSU can require either a 6 pin or 8 pin, but not two 8 pins.

popular gpu users have used in 3880:

Nvidia GT 1030 88x
Nvidia GeForce GT 730 26x
Nvidia GTX 1050-Ti 25x
Nvidia GTX 1650 22x
Nvidia GTX 1050 11x
Nvidia GeForce GT 710 9x
Nvidia GTX 1060-6GB 9x
Nvidia RTX 3050 8x
AMD RX 550 6x

Inspiron desktop has poor air flow without mod, so in general when adding a video card, choose one that has TDP <150-200w as general rule.  the lower the TDP the better it will get cooled in 3880.  HTH.

I know this is old but I got an amd rx6400. Popped this in the 3880 in 5 minutes. No power connector, no psu replacement required. This is definitely the way to go. Power draw never goes above 50 watts. Performance is equal to the gtx 1650 but as I said no power connector required and much cheaper
