Inspiron 3470 i5-8400 CPU @2.80GHz. with 8GB ram - Motherboard PCI express slots
Inspiron 3470
Hi, I can't find this info anywhere so hope you can help
There are two available slots on the 3470 Motherboard
Slot 1 PCI express x1
Slot 2 PCI express x16
for the larger of the PCI express slots, which generation of PCIe is the slot 2 a PCIe 2.0, PCIe 3.0 or PCIe 4.0 ?
(I realise that it has backward compatibility, I think it likely is a PCIe 3.0 though 4.0 had come out prior to my 2018 3470 being released)
Many thanks
Graham

Re: I think it likely is a PCIe 3.0
you are correct.
For Intel's 11th generation processors, you'll need a motherboard with the Z590 or B560 chipset for full PCIe 4.0 support. Intel 12th gen cpu with 600 series chipset supports 4.0 too. the 300 series chipset in 3470 w intel 8th gen cpu does not support 4.0.
For AMD's Ryzen processors, you'll need a motherboard with the X570 chipset for full PCIe 4.0 support.

Many thanks both, @speedstep and @redxps630 (again) for taking the time to reply and for confirming the PCIe version.
@speedstep you recommended the AMD RX 6400 it looks OKish for power 53watts, are you sure it would fit? it looks very thick, there are two slots taken with the case bracket. is there space for the GPU heat sink/fan as the slot is hard up against the power supply?
Ahh, the 2nd link is much more slimline I’ll look to see if the swift gfx card is available in the UK.
If you are ok with this, I’ll accept the thread as solved and copy the graphic card portion to a new thread as there is very little info available on possible graphic cards for the 3470. maybe it will help others as the only suggestions I’ve seen thus far are the nvidia GeForce GT 1030 based chipsets.
Once more, many thanks for your assistance Graham
