G5 5000, Firmware Update failed

Same error message whether I try updating through Windows or the BIOS flash option from a USB drive. I'm stuck on ver 1.7.

Try clearing BIOS:

  1. Reboot and start tapping F2 when you see the Dell splash screen to open BIOS setup
  2. Copy down all current BIOS settings, to be safe
  3. Power off, unplug
  4. Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
  5. Open case and remove motherboard battery (check Service Manual for details)
  6. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
  7. Reinstall the battery (Time for fresh CR2032 3-volt coin cell battery? ~$2)
  8. Close up and connect mouse, monitor and keyboard
  9. Reboot to desktop
  10. Power off normally, and try the update again via the F12 menu using BIOS v1.10.0 .exe on the USB stick

What version are you trying to install,  1.8.1, 1.9.0. or 1.10.0?

Have you tried downloading the update again? Are you sure you chose the .exe file, not the .rcv file?

When you tried updating using the BIOS flash option, does the updater actually see the correct .exe file on the USB stick?

If you tried 1.10.0 but it failed, keep in mind it's only a few days old, so you might try installing 1.9.0.

I have tried all three versions, same result.

I always use the .exe files.

The updater does see the correct .exe file on the flash drive.

I had the same option trying to update from 1.7.0. I tried the steps outlined in the solution, but that did not work for me. I was unable to update to any newer versions past 1.7.0. I set the option in the BIOS to allow downgrade, and downgraded to version 1.6.1. After that I was able to upgrade to version 1.10.0.
