Dell Update UWA stopped working after Win 11 22H2 update
I have an Inspiron 3881 desktop with Win 11, and all is hunky dory ... until just hours ago, I updated windows to Win 11 22H2.
First, during windows update, I got a pop up error, something about unable to find file xxxDUP.tmp - which I later found is related to Dell Update
Second, popping crackling noise starts whenever I play audio/video, or switch from pause to play audio on any app/win services. It was like pop, then the sound played. I think I may have fixed this by disabling Audio Enhancements in sound settings (for the default speaker).
Third, most annoying, is Dell Update windows app stops working. I mean it was running fine (v4.4.0) and I also updated the BIOS and few other drivers right before running the Win 11 22H2 update. After Win 11 22H2 is running, Dell Update app starts, but runs in a loop when checking for update.
I uninstall Dell Update app, and looked everywhere to get the latest version. found one in Dell support, which is v4.5.0 (has 2 variants depending on your OS). I chose the one for Win 11, downloaded it, and install it. Failed immediately.
I tried installing the old version 4.4.0 also failed despite the dell support site indicated Inspiron 3881 and Win 11 is supported.
At least for now, My Dell app still works and I can launch an update query.
Dell Update UWA is very convenient when checking for updates, and now inexplicably is not installable.
Any thoughts/help appreciated.

Hi guys. My problem is fixed as of now.
Going back to what NJDave pointed out, culprit is Win 11 - 22H2 Preview build.
Not only Dell Update UWA doesn't run, it also failed to install (reinstall). Regardless of version.
Other problems:
* Cloudflare app failed to update, though existing version still works
* Crackling, popping noise occurred randomly, mostly when a sound is triggered (system sound) or during audio stream playback (YouTube etc.). I tried all kinds of fix, including disabling Audio Enhancement (sound properties), changing playback sampling bit and sampling rate. None works. It came to a point of annoying, as crackling noise would sound from time to time, even when no audio is playing.
So the fix is, uninstalling the W11 22H2 build, and go back to 21H2 build 22000.739.
During the process of going back, Google Chrome got messed up, and got a side by side error popped out. The only fix was to uninstall and reinstall. But chrome is snazzy, all settings and history are restored per my account.
Thanks so much for the responses.

Dunno... A little googling finds a bunch of posts on the forum with similar problems installing Dell utilities, including the same empty vendor log and 10-digit "Vendor Software Return Code" (which I suspect is supposed to be a single-digit integer, with 0 indicating success). Most of those involve Alienware Command Center. None of them includes a solution, unfortunately.
Since Windows 11 22H2 is pre-release as of now, perhaps Dell hasn't yet got around to quality-testing Dell Update on it?

Thanks for looking this up Dave. Yeah, I was betting it has something to do with W11-22H2 not yet a full public release. I mean with the previous W11 build, generally all Dell apps were hunky dory. I do understand that most Dell Update UWA were quirky to begin with. But version 4.4.0 was the most stable one. Until 22H2 is installed.
I have tried a number of suggested solutions from this forum and others. None works. Anyway, let's hope someone will dig in deeper and determine what rigs the install. Keeping my options open.

You could disable Dell Update for time being and just enter your Service Tag on the support page to find the drivers for your specific hardware and then download/install them manually.
(Don't post Service Tag here.)

Thanks Ron, I also tried that.
Note that My Dell is still working at least. The Dell Support page where you input the service tag to get the related drivers etc doesn't sync with what's already there in our device. So, although is a working channel, it's displaying all the things (most, if not all) that you may already have on.
Out of all the update channel, I do find the Dell Update UWA is the most useful and efficient one.

Glad you got it sorted by reverting to 21H2. Guess that's what happens when you try a preview build.
Since this is a preview build, you must be on Microsoft's "insider channel", so you might want to report your issues to them...

Thanks Ron. Yeah I'm in the MS Insider's channel. I did report every single quirks I encountered like what I posted here. Suffice to say they got classified as problem and a thanks. Not even a brownie points
I'd indicated for now to not receive that specific 22H2 build and opted to manually upgrade for the next preview build, with much more attention to the Insider's forum first.
