Dell Inspiron 3668 i3 7th gen gpu upgrade questions

I have a inspiron 3668 and I am buying an asus 730 GDDR5 2gb. I saw from other forums that I need to take secure boot off and do some stuff in bios or my pc wont boot and im wondering if any of that is true an if so, how would I set it up.

https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-GeForce-Profile-Graphics-Brackets/dp/B09GP8989B/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=gt%2B730&qid=1670108134&sr=8-5&th=1&tag=coa_us_g-20

Heres the link if it helps. Thanks

Three things to keep in mind:

What's the power supply rating recommended for the specific card you want? The Inspiron 3668 specs don't list the PSU rating, but I suspect it's 240 Watts.

Does this card have the right video output ports for your monitor? You do not want to use VGA which is a low quality analog signal.

Make sure the card supports the game(s) you want to play.  Looks like this card supports DirectX 12, but the "feature" level is only 11_0, which could be a problem with newer DirectX 12 games.

Other than changing Secure Boot and correctly installing the card in the PCI-e x16 slot, you may have to load the driver if Windows Update doesn't do it for you.

You must have posted while I was typing....

Once you install the video card, the monitor connection has to be from the HDMI port on the video card to HDMI on TV, not  from the onboard Intel HDMI port.

As I said, when the card is installed, at least one monitor has to be connected to it, so you probably won't get a signal to TV or an error message, if you connect the TV to the onboard HDMI port.

that could be misinformation. should be plug n play.  just leave bios alone at factory default settings.

I forgot to mention I’m not buying it for multi display but only for low end gaming like miecraft and emulations. Would I only have to turn off secure boot before I install it? And if so how do I do it please and thanks

Drivers for many/most after-market GPUs won't load/run when Secure Boot is enabled, unless the GPU OEM has paid big bucks to Microsoft to get their driver officially "signed". So don't be surprised if the PC won't boot with Secure Boot enabled.

You'd have to uninstall the new video card, connect monitor to one of the onboard Intel Graphics ports (HDMI, VGA). Then disable Secure Boot in BIOS., and last, re-install the new video card and connect a monitor directly to it.

There are two other BIOS options you may need/want to change:

Multi-Display -  Enable or disable the Multi-Display option
Primary Display - Select the primary video controller

If you want to connect a monitor to both the new video card and to one of the onboard Intel Graphics ports at the same time, you need to enable Multi-Display.  When an add-in video card is installed, at least one monitor has to be connected to that card before you can connect a second monitor to an onboard Intel Graphics port, with Multi-Display enabled.

And in this case, you should also set Primary Display to NVidia.

I tinkered around with it and the power supply’s tag said 240 watts. I got a 730 and not a 1030 bc i didn’t want to strain the power supply since it’s 5 years old. It has hdmi and I’m not planning on playing triple a games on it. Thanks a lot you were a huge help

Doesn't matter what you'll be using the new GPU for. If the GPU OEM didn't pay Microsoft, you'll have to disable Secure Boot or PC won't boot.

Yes, you should disable Secure Boot before you install the new card. Otherwise, you'll have to uninstall it to make the change, if PC doesn't boot with Secure Boot enabled, and then reinstall the card. Might just be easier to disable Secure Boot first and only have to install the card once. Even if the video driver is "signed", disabling Secure Boot won't cause any problems.

To disable Secure Boot, reboot PC and tap F2 when you see the Dell splash screen to open BIOS setup (see table 5). Disable Secure Boot, but do not change anything else in BIOS setup, if you're not planning to use Multi-Display.  Save the change and exit setup.

The PC will automatically boot to desktop when you exit setup. Power off normally in Windows. Follow instructions to install the new video card. When that's done, close case and make sure you connect the monitor to the new video card, not to either of the onboard Intel Graphics ports, and boot up...

You may not have to turn off secure boot to use that card.  The card may just work with bios in default factory settings but if you are curious how to turn off secure boot, press F2 immediately after power on to enter bios and access secure boot option there.

System setup options—Secure Boot menu
SECURE BOOT
Secure Boot Enable Enable or disable the secure boot feature.

Yea!  Glad you got it installed and working.

BTW: Did you have to disable Secure Boot or did you just disable it without even trying the new GPU with Secure Boot enabled?
