Dell 5676 Bios chip replacement

My 5676 system crashed during a BIOS upgrade. I have purchased a replacement pre-programmed BIOS chip, but I am confused as to where it should go. There are several identical looking chips on the board. I cannot find a 5676 (or 5675) board diagram that identifies the BIOS chip. Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Jim.

Hi

Hope this helps...

To identify the BIOS chip on a Dell 5676 motherboard:

  • Look near the Super I/O chip or Southbridge on the motherboard; the BIOS chip will usually be nearby.

  • The BIOS chip is a small chip (often 8-pin SOIC) sometimes marked with a manufacturer code like Winbond or SST.

  • The chip will have a reference label printed on it (e.g., 25Q128, 25Q16) that can be verified online for BIOS chip confirmation.

  • The pin one corner of the chip usually has a small dot or indentation as an orientation marker.

  • The chip is often near other chipset components but distinct from power ICs or MOSFETs.

  • For exact identification, comparing the chip markings with datasheets or searching the chip number online helps confirm its function as BIOS.

In practice, a multimeter continuity test can help confirm ground (pin 4) and power (pin 8) pins per BIOS chip pinout, but physically locating it by position and chip marking is most straightforward for identification.

For Dell Inspiron 5676 specifically, reports show it uses a Winbond 25Q128FWSQ or a similar SPI flash BIOS chip.

For detailed visuals and typical pin assignments, videos and service manuals for Dell motherboards are helpful references.

Hi anne_droid!

Many thanks for taking the time and effort to provide such a detailed and informative response. It is rare to find someone who has both a deep technical knowledge and the ability to clearly communicate their knowledge.

On the basis of the Winbond chip reference number that you provided, it only took a few minutes to find the BIOS chip on the board. The replacement BIOS chip that I purchased also has this reference number so I can confidently go ahead now and have someone with the necessary technical skills replace the BIOS.

Again, many thanks- you have been amazing.

Best regards,

Jim.
