Can not install or run Win 10 on old Inspiron 530 MT

tried many times, it would not work

Win 10 and Win 11 run fine on the studio 540S.

trouble with 530 is that it is like some aurora model with a fixed IO shield built in case.  I can not even put a 540S motherboard in 530 case unless i drill some custom hole to modify the oem IO shield.  quite dumb for Dell to do that.

still do not understand why it would block win 10.  not that I have to because it runs 7 well and can be used as a retro pc.  I just want to understand the root cause of the OS block.

user benchmark shows some users do run 10 on 530.  not sure if they have a different ver of oem motherboard or bios needs to be updated.  I thought my 530 bios is most recent but i will check again.

@redxps630 I see some hick up from Win 11 on certain machine but not Win 10.  Without a specific clue, it's hard to guess the reason.  A Win 10 USB created by creation tool is universal self-created and is hard to make a mistake with.

Tested with older boards and it's working too.  Intel, HP, Dell, they all got to selection of partition for installation.  CPU tested with Core 2 Duo E6600, Core 2 Duo E7200, Athlon II x4, Athlon II x3.  Only a Dimension 8400 I had struggle with and settled for a 32-bit installation instead.  It has a Prescott Pentium 4 I think.

Testing prep for the Inspiron 530, set BIOS (1.0.18) to RAID, and first boot to hard drive (as USB is considered hard drive group).  Tapping F12 away and Win 10 USB drive appears in boot group for selection.  May take up to 10 seconds for that blinking dash to turn into Windows logo (boot).  It also works well with Win 11 created by Rufus tool to strip all hardware requirements.

Take it a validation or encouragement.  That's all I can say.

done.  it was actually the cmos that needs to be reset.  before that win 7 install had no issue and win 10 always aborted.  chino is correct.  lesson to self: clear cmos on old pc.

Somewhat confusing, thread title is about operating system installation, while post body was with IO shield and motherboard transplant.  Whichever the case, a different result was achieved and information is provided below.

Have been tested before and confirming that the Inspiron 530 can be installed and worked with Windows 10 and Windows 11.  Can be installed in both SATA mode, either IDE or AHCI (must turn RAID on).

Hardware test used, Core 2 Quad Q6600, 4 GB of RAM, 100 GB of SSD, and ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics card.  A gigabit network card was added for better ethernet connection.

Software test ran Word, Excel, Outlook, Acrobat Pro.  Light gaming, classic games triple titles Sonic Heroes, Sonic Riders, Sonic Forces, and adventure pack of Nancy Drew series.  Media tested, network streaming with no lag for full HD titles.

Machine is viable and very fast for most daily usage tasks and some light gaming.

Did not have a Studio 540s for comparison but is waiting for a conductive ink pen and some ARCTIC MX4 to arrive and will perform a BSEL mod to bump CPU clock to 3 GHz (done a tape mod before).

To sum up, it can be done.  Trace your step to find and correct the mistake.  Then perform the installation again.

Edited for additional info:  for 4k playback, an old AMD Radeon R5 can be used.

If after more effort this PC is just not going to run Win10, then I would either let it go as a Win 7 end of life test PC, or tear it down for parts. The reason IO shield and 540S was mentioned in opening discussion is that if possible I would like to build a sleeper pc using the 530 chassis. But I am against case mutilation.  So the permanent IO shield is a road block.  Chino is correct that Win10 was validated in 530, actually not only core 2 quad cpu (implying a board ver. w quad support) as well as core 2 duo CPU on a board ver. that does not support quad.  I have to check my board ver. and CPU again.  But as I recall it would not start Win 10 installation at all.  I do many Win10 install using same media and same boot on lot of Dell. Unlikely it is a procedure mistake.
