BIOS update always fails

Inspiron 3020 Desktop

Inspiron 3020 Desktop

Hello,

the BIOS update to version 1.8.0 (released 10/16/2023, currently installed 1.1.0) for my Inspiron 3020 desktop always fails. Both directly via the Dell update and when running the downloaded exe file. There is always a notification that a reboot is required (see image, German language). However, without success, the update is not performed, meanwhile tried several times.

What exactly is "DBUtilDrv2 Device" that seems to be causing the issue?

Thanks for any help!

@BK_Comm  Is BitLocker enabled on this PC? You must (temporarily) disable BitLocker before you can install a BIOS update.

Manually download/save the Inspiron 3020 BIOS update 1.8.0 .exe file (not the .rcv) file on a empty 2-GB USB stick that's formatted FAT32.

Then power PC off completely (not a Restart from inside Windows). With the USB stick plugged into the PC, power on and immediately start tapping F12 to open the menu. Select the Flash Update option from the menu to start the update.  Read "Updating the BIOS from BIOS Boot Menu (independent of operating system)" under Installation Instructions on the page I linked above for more details.

PC will reboot itself several times during the update.  Leave PC alone until it's safely back at your desktop, even though it may look like it shut down completely and isn't doing anything.

This forum thread may help with DBUtilDrv2 Device. That is part of the Dell update app.

@RoHe

Hello,
the flash update via USB stick finally worked. Now BIOS version 1.8.0 is installed (although the issue related to DBUtilDrv2 Device is still unclear to me).
However, many thanks for your support!

@BK_Comm  - Glad the update worked for you via the F12 menu with a USB stick! I wouldn't worry about the DBUtilDrv2 problem. It's part of Dell Update as @JOcean said. And it's been known to cause problems like you had.

I'd recommend you stop trying to update BIOS using Dell Update/SupportAssist. It's always safer and easier to update BIOS entirely outside of Windows.

I'd also recommend you open BIOS setup now and disable UEFI Capsule Updates to prevent Windows Update from installing the next BIOS update without warning and without permission.  This setting gets re-enabled every time you update BIOS, regardless of the method used. So every time you install a new BIOS update, you'll have to disable Capsule Updates again once the new update is installed...

@RoHe Hello Ron, I have a vintage Dell Inspiron 17 (3737) and cant find a bios update for it. Cant find anything on the Dell site. They just say buy a new PC.  This old Tank works great, but I get an error message that the battery is not detected.  It was recommended to update the bios.

Any suggestions?

This is one frustrated senior citizen.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

@Fran1954 If I may jump in here. The newest BIOS shown here is from 2019 and possibly newer than the version you have. There are a number of reasons the battery may not be detected. It could be a fault in the battery, or the DC jack may be the problem, or it could be the MB charging circuit. That might be an older system but I have some older Latitudes that are also tanks and rock solid stable. I hope this helps out. And from one senior to another, hopefully we can help you solve the problem.

@Fran1954  - Are you getting this error when trying to boot on battery, with power adapter disconnected? Does PC boot with power adapter connected, with/without the error?

Like @JOcean said, it might be a failed main power battery, especially if it's the original and probably 10+ years old.

But keep in mind there's also a coin cell battery on the motherboard which might have died, if not recently replaced. So you may want to replace this battery first, since it's an inexpensive CR2032 coin cell (~$3).

Disconnect power adapter and remove main battery. Press/hold power button on PC for ~15 sec. Now follow instructions at the link to remove the old coin cell and then press/hold power button on PC for ~30 sec.

Next, install a fresh  CR2032 battery, replace the base cover, and main battery. Reboot and see if that solves the problem.  Note: you have to charge the main battery for a few hours before attempting to boot on battery power.

And if nothing helps, I see main batteries for Inspiron 17 3737 at ~$20-$30 for a 6-cell version on the big online shopping sites. A compatible 4-cell battery probably costs less but IMO, is too wimpy....

Get one with a reasonable warranty (3+ years)...

Was having the same problem with BIOS updates for a while.  Yesterday, I updated to the latest BIOS (1.14 (???)).  Once again, I tried using the downloaded EXE file.  This time it actually worked!

Need more details...

Are you running Windows? Win 10 or Win 11?

Was power adapter connected to this PC during the update?

Does PC not boot at all, or boots but still has the "old" version of BIOS running?

How did you attempt to install the BIOS update? Dell Command or manually inside Windows, or using the F12 Flash Update option (outside Windows)?

What version of BIOS did you have and what version failed?

Was an external monitor connected to this laptop during the update?

You could try doing a BIOS Recovery by following the instructions here with  the BIOS Recovery .rcv file for BIOS 1.40.0 on a non-bootable USB stick.  Read/follow the instructions carefully. And make sure the power adapter is connected to the PC and to a working wall outlet.
