2nd Monitor Connection

Inspiron 5400 AIO

Inspiron 5400 AIO

My friend gave me a Dell monitor (E2420H) and it has a displayport and VGA.  MFG June '21

I cannot use it as a 2nd monitor.  Tried HDMI out to displayport and no detection.  Tried the USB-C to displayport with no detection (my Samsung laptop's USB-C port does work with the monitor).  Is the only option using the VGA port?

Is your adapter an active HDMI(PC)>DP(monitor) cable? An HDMI output cannot translate properly to a DisplayPort input if you use a passive adapter.

And, importantly, these video cables typically work only in one direction so you can't just turn them end-for-end and expect them to work.

Are you sure you used the HDMI-Out on the PC, not HDMI-In? BTW: The maximum resolution supported by the PC's HDMI port is 1920 x 1080 at 60 Hz (24-bit).

Have you opened the monitor's own On-Screen-Display (OSD) to make sure it's set to use DP as its input port? If it's set to "Auto-Detect" try changing the OSD setting to DP.

And, the USB-c port on this PC doesn't carry video or audio, so that's not going to work, even though it works with your lappy....

Glad to help...

Correct, you need an active HDMI(PC)>DP(monitor). NOTE: DP(PC)>HDMI(monitor) adapters are more common, but not what you need. So make sure you get one with the right orientation. Whether you get an adapter with only connection ports and no (or very short) permanently attached cables depends on whether you already have HDMI and DP cables that are long enough to get from PC to monitor.

When you've got the right adapter, I'd change the OSD to DP to be sure the monitor will look for the right input signal.

You don't want an HDMI>VGA adapter. VGA is an analog signal, not a digital signal, so the quality/performance will be poor, especially compared to the LCD in your 5400 AIO.

Post back and let us know when you get the external monitor working....

Thank you Ron.  I am not up to speed on the DP.  I have always had a monitor with HDMI.  If I understand correctly, I would need an active and not passive HDMI to DP.  What I had was passive.  Either that a HDMI to VGA adapter.

I have a HDMI In and Out on back.  I did know the difference with those.

BTW- the OSD gives me three input sources: Auto, VGA, DP.

Again, thank you for the help.

Received my adapter today and it works like a charm.  I learned a lot more about DP in the process.  Thank you for your time and instruction!
