Troubleshooting Domain Join Failures with Dell Image Assist

Image Assist Dynamic - Domain Join:

  • Process: Automates domain join during first boot on customer network, not in Dell’s factory.
  • Failure: If domain join fails, system hangs at “Getting ready…” for 5-25 minutes, then reboots and joins a local workgroup.

Troubleshooting:

  1. Ensure correct www.dell.com/familypack was used
  2. Ensure network cable is plugged in during first boot
  3. Verify the account has rights to add machines to the domain
  4. Check for typos in the unattend answer file
  5. Ensure the account is not locked out
  6. Confirm NAC is not blocking

Network Connectivity Test:

  • At “Getting ready…” delay, press SHIFT+F10, run ipconfig to check for network adapter and IP address.
    • No NIC: Check BIOS, drivers, or add family driver packs
    • NIC but no IP: Check network cable, DHCP server, or network issues
    • NIC & IP: Ping domain controller by name and IP to check DNS or network issues

TIP: Look at the c:\windows\debug\netsetup.log file for more errors. More information from Microsoft below.
