Tape Cleaning PV 124T

I have a Powervault 124T in a remote site, so all knowledge is heresay. The drive keeps prompting for a cleaning tape - over and over again. The local technician has done this repeatedly, and even after purchasing a new cleaning tape, it repeatedly prompts for a cleaning even after several attempts. Is it possible we are overlooking something, or is the drive (from 2006) toast ?

Wasn't there a problem years ago with using non DELL brand cleaning tapes ?

suggestions welcome...

since the unit is almost six years old, I suspect it is simply worn out. we'll try the firmware first

Hello tgoetzman,

One thing that I would do is to update the firmware on the PV 124T to the latest.  There have been some issues that the drive gets cleaned but the error still won’t go away.  Here is a link to download the latest firmware. www.dell.com/.../DriverDetails

After updating the firmware the PV 124T still states that the drive needs to be cleaned then yes your read & write heads are worn out & need to be replaced.  The brand of cleaning media doesn’t matter as much as all cleaning tapes are the same so as long as you are using an LTO cleaning media that is fine.
