Post firmware upgrade restart

Hi, I need to upgrade the firmware on my PS6100 EqualLogic controllers.

I've found the instructions on how to do this and it all looks straight forward to do through the GUI.

I notice there is a restart needed after the firmware has been applied. Does this mean I need to gracefully shutdown the VMs running on my SAN LUNs? Will my iSCSI connections be closed/broken during the post firmware upgrade restart?

Thanks, Oliver.

Hi Dell-Donald Wi,

Our current firmware version is v7.0.4. We experienced the following issue last week:

"EQL: Controllers on firmware V7.0.0 to V7.0.7H1 may restart after 248 days with ERROR WATCHDOG RECOVERY due to the watchdog on a NetBSD processor."

We have been advised by Dell support to upgrade a version above v7.0.9. I see the latest version is v7.1.11 so I will upgrade to that.

Our environment is configured with switch resiliency. Both controllers are on the same switch and on the same LAN, As per the 'iSCSI initiator and operating system considerations optimizing your SAN environment for High Availability' document.

We also have Dell HIT 4.6.0 installed on our 3 Hyper-V host machines (Dell R710, Win 2012 R2). I see HIT 4.8 is available, should I upgrade to this before performing the EqualLogic firmware upgrade? If so, can HIT 4.8 just be run over the top of 4.6? Does it require a restart to complete?

Thanks, Oliver.

Hi Donald,

Thanks again for the reply.

Sorry, I did indeed mean they are connected to both switches.

The SAN and LAN traffic are on different subnets. I don't think they are separately VLAN'd on the switches though. Is this a problem?

Would I need to update HIT on our Hyper-V host machines to 4.8.0 before running the post firmware restart in order to maintain uptime on our iSCSI connections?

Oliver.
