Equallogic PS4100 - RAID 10 Expansion using hot spare

Hello,

Just a quick one, we're running a PS4100 in RAID 10 with 2 hot spares.

I'd like to expand the RAID to incorporate the 2 drives, is that possible or do I have to teardown the whole RAID?

Thanks

Hi,

i cant answer your questions but... creating raidsets without hot spares was only possible from the commandline and not the groupmanager gui.  So you can check if there was a parameter to create a raid10 without hotspares. If no that i would expect no option to expand to one.

But if yes this also doesnt mean its possible ;)

Joerg

Thanks for that Joerg,

Fingers crossed someone comes in with the commands to expand in to the hot spares (if possible at all)

Hi Don, thanks for coming back to me.

The array is under warranty and the plan prior to expanding in to the hot spare would be to to purchase a cold spare that we can put in if required.

It's a 24x 600GB 10k array. 22 are in use (RAID10) and 2 are hot spares (the 2 I would like to incorporate into the current array)

We back up all our virtual machines daily with Veeam, the frontend is VMware.

Whilst I appreciate there's always risk when expanding storage I'm assuming the process you talk about brings the 2 disks into the RAID without tearing down the current RAID and purposefully trashing the existing data??

Thanks :)

Thanks Don,

I'll source an official drive first, ensure the firmware is up to date on the drives and EqualLogic and then proceed with the expansion.

Would you say this is a risky procedure or something that's pretty routine?
