Do I need more SFP+ host ports if I add another PS6210X disk shelf
Hi all
We have a Server 2012 R2 4 node Hyper V cluster with each host having 2 10GbE SFP+ dedicated to iSCSI traffic. We need to expand the capacity of the SAN and our vendor has quoted for another shelf but is saying we need another 2 10GbE SFP+ ports in each of our hosts. Is this correct ?
I was under the impression that each of our hosts are already 'hooked' into the iSCSI fabric with MPIO active and therefore do not need any more physical iSCSI connections.
If we opt not to install extra iSCSI Nic's will we lose performance ?
many thanks
Gary

Most likely not. In a virt. environment you have random IO with smaler blocksizes which means less bandwidth. If you have dedicated 2x10GbE you need a couple of PS Member do deliver the IOPS and fill this huge pipe.
I suggest that you install SANHQ when its not already there and check the bandwith and transferrates you already have.
To compare.... i have 10 PS members in 2 Pools with 11 Hosts (each one have 2x10GbE just for iSCSI) and the PS Group send around 400MB/s. and up to 1000MB/s during backup.
I need a IOmeter and 100% Read Sequential with 256KB blocksie workload to fill 2x10 pipe of a server.

One more thing...... the ISL of your switch fabric have to be >=75% bandwidth of all EQL (active) ports.

Thank you both for the quick replies. I looked at the network utilisation in SAN HQ and even during backup it is no where near utilising the full bandwidth - only reaching about 15% max.
