storage for sun/oracle sparc
Hi,
I have old Sunfire V440 and V240 servers which I intend to connect to DAS scsi storage. Does dell have any compatible with Sparc systems? If so, please let me know or if any suggestions.
Device should support 8-10 HDD slots, Raid controller, 10k/15 drives, SCSI
Thanks

As SCSI is pretty old, your best bet is to look into a 2nd hand PV220S. The PV220S is just a Disk Enclosure, so you'll need to find a SCSI raid controller that's compatible with your server and OS. Dell tends to use LSI controllers for their PERC adapters (unless you go back to the PERC3 adapters as there were some Adaptec models in that range), so if you want to be more certain about compatibility, I'd suggest to look for an LSI solution.
If you are considering SAS drives, Dell has the MD1000 (holds up to 15 3.5" drives vertically mounted in a 3U enclosure), the MD1200 (holds up to 12 3.5" drives horizontally mounted in a 2U enclosure) or the MD1220 (holds up to 24 2.5" drives vertically mounted in a 2U enclosure). These do require a SAS raid controller (PERC5E or PERC6E are the Dell supported models for the MD1000 and the PERC H800 is for the MD12xx units), but a non-Dell SAS adapter (with the right cables) will probably work too (again LSI recommended).

Thank you for informative reply. Appreciate it.
Second option is considerable as I don't really want to go after old storage devices.
I am okay with SAS drives. However, my only concern is server connecting interface to sparc system. I am not sure if I will get SAS raid adapters for v440/v240. Infact if I can just connect the MD1000 to sparc server through any LVD/SE SCSI adapter I can then do VxVM or Solaris Volume manager on my solaris system for software RAID.
Wonder if 'md1000 to server' cable is actually a LVD/SE interface which I can use to start with..
Thank you!

The SAS protocol doesn't have HVD and LVD versions, so when you say LVD it automatically refers to SCSI. This will not be compatible with the MD1000; it has to have a SAS controller.
