Dell 2950 and QLA2342 Fiber Adapter

Can anyone provide assistance with these devices? I have a 2950 server that is running 2003 ENT. R2 with a PCI QLA2342 card. Not as experience with fiber cards and it came with the Dell server awhile back. I am trying to see if there is any way to determine if the card is functional other than it showing up in device manager.

The card is connected to a Quantum DX30, which is apparently a very old device, via fiber cabling. The fiber card show’s that is has the drivers installed already in device manager. I have solid green LED on the dual port fiber card. However, 2003 does not show the Quantum as a tape library and medium changer in device manager.

Any help would be appreciated.

 Hello tedkilroy,

Here is a link to SANsurfers documentation. http://www.sandirect.com/documents/Q-SANSurfer_App_User_guide.pdf   if you look on page 10-9 it shows you what the results should be.  The 0 for each of the test is correct as if you were to get any other value then you could have an issue with the card.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello tedkilroy,

What you can do is to download Qlogic SAN surfer & you can use that to test the Qlogic card to make sure that the card is working correctly.  Here is a link to download the tool.  http://driverdownloads.qlogic.com/QLogicDriverDownloads_UI/SearchByProduct.aspx?ProductCategory=39&Product=255&Os=84

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks Sam L. for the response. I loaded SANsurfer and ran the diagnostic. It lead me to recable my fiber into the qla2342 and that prodiced loopback success!

However, can you tell me why I would get in the Read_Write buffer test "not support" and in the detailed diag info for each adapter "CRC Error: 0, Disparity Error: 0, Frame Length Error: 0. Are they significant errors? This is as far as the SANsurfer results have taken me.

Thanks sammy, finally got the fibe card configured. I can now see the Quantum device listed in the tape libray/device mgr and can now setup my storage in backup exec.

I had to configure port 5 to lun 0 & 1 and port 6 to lun 3&4. Thanks again for helping
