Tower Plus EBT2250, come equipped with carriers and cables for 3.5" HDDs?

Some interior photos appear to show empty carriers installed, others show empty bays. Do you need to buy new carriers and cables?

@Gymbow

The easy part of the answer is yes, the data and power connector/cables are included.

Internally thought there is a caddy for 3.5 drives.

For a 2.5 drive I think you'll need either 2.5 caddy that fits or a 'adapter' to make the 2.5 drive look like a 3.5.

Dell's 2.5 Caddy ---> https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-25-hard-disk-drive-caddy-for-small-form-factor-tower/apd/cpx-yhnfx/storage-drives-media and it is not cheap and I can't verify it would work, suggest calling Dell before buying.

However, this might work as well --->https://www.newegg.com/orico-1125ss/p/1B0-0003-000T6?item=9SIA1DSK874464&utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic+shopping&utm_campaign=knc-googleadwords-_-accessories%20-%20hard%20drive-_-orico-_-9SIA1DSK874464&source=region and it is cheap enough as well. Allows you to put the 2.5 inch drive in it and then put it into the included 3.5 drive caddy, assuming the caddy pins would be in the right position (more than likely is).

No, at least I did not and answered in your other subject here.

What about the cables and carrier for a 2.5” SSD (ie to add an external SSD in one of the internal bays)?  Or do these need to be ordered separately?

I think you’re mixing apples and oranges. An SSD is a solid state device that is shaped like a stick of chewing gum and is attached to the motherboard. An HHD, or hard disk drive, does come in a 2 1/2 inch size.  I’m not sure that an external HDD can be used inside the EBT 2250 case.  From what I’ve read, a 2 1/2 inch HDD requires a carrier that adapts it to the 3 1/2 inch cage in the 2250.

M.2 and SATA NVME SSD's are shaped like RAM sticks.  Chewing gum isn't a bad analogy either.  SATA SSD's are 2.5" and shaped like a credit card.  HDD's come in both 2.5" and 3.5" sizes, with the 3.5" having higher capacities.

@bradthetechnut

Thanks for the clarification; I had no idea there were 2 1/2 inch SSD’s shaped like a credit card.  Could one actually be adapted to fit in an internal bay, per the OPS question?

@Richmond Dan

I should clarify - I have an older SSD (Samsung 860 Evo 2.5 inch Sata 3 internal SSD) that I’d like to install inside the case.  Do you know if the EBT2250 comes with the carrier and cables needed to connect this?

@Gymbow Sorry, I don't, but perhaps @bradthetechnut does.

@ispalten  So data cables are also included for extra HDD's/SSD's?  That seems to be a new one for Dell.  Usually there's just an extra power connection.

@bradthetechnut

Not reallyy 'new for Dell'.

On my XPS8940 they also had data and power connectors.

This was a difference, and by designs I guess? On the 8940 (and probably other 89x0's), the 2nd hard drive data cable was there in the bundle. Now it was possible because I bought the 8940 and it came with the mechanical and I added an SSD after I got it (that was in 2020, so I might be wrong 🤔) and the cables and connector's were there.

On the EBT2250 we just got, again ordered with a Mechanical 2nd drive installed. Now this is from the 2250 manual:

As you can see, the 2nd hard drive data cable is part of the main data cable. The power cable for the 2nd drive was in the bundle of cables on the motherboard... easy to get out and use.

I guess the question is it due to the fact I bought the 2250 with the 2nd drive (SSD was the first) and therefore the cabling had the connector's or is it 'standard'?

You made me think it might not be standard to have those cables? When in doubt I guess, check with a call to Dell?

Sorry to anyone if I was wrong and that it would only apply to those purchased with a hard drive?

@bradthetechnut

Hmm, after looking at what I posted, I am NOT sure what our 2250 looks like? I found some pictures of the internal case (I am too lazy to pull out the 2250 to open the case and look) but the picture I posted above shows a SINGLE drive bay. From other picture I've seen, that is what it is, a SINGLE drive bay. The OTHER drive bay is on the other side of the top.

Again, ours was purchased with a 2TB Mechanical drive included with the motherboard M.2 SSD. When I got it I did install another 2TB Mechanical into the OTHER sides drive cage caddy and found the cables in the bundle.

It is quite possible Dell has different part numbers for the cabling depending on options you choose, like a hard drive or even a CD/DVD?

I did check the parts list though, and I saw this, "5H462 INFO,AUDIO,CABLE,DETECT", which might be specific to our EBT2250 and has the hard drive cabling for 2 drives, one they installed?

I guess if someone has a 2250 without an installed hard drive they could verify if they got the same Dell Part Number?

@ispalten  No need to be sorry.  Not new to you, but new to me I guess?

I buy refurbs.  Optiplex's 755, 790, 7010, Precision 3620 - None had extra data cables.  The connections were there on the MB of course.  As for the Precision 3420, I haven't looked at the inside of it.  I presume it doesn't have extra data cables.
