Create custom report

I would like to create a customized report that corresponds to the fields from the standard report “Firmware Compliance per Component Report”, but contains some additional fields. Unfortunately, when i try to create the report, i cannot find the field named “Component Name”, for example, and therefore cannot recreate the report. How can i solve this? Please see the attached screenshots.

Hi

based on the screenshots provided and your request, it appears you are trying to recreate or extend the "Firmware Compliance per Component Report" in Dell OpenManage Enterprise, but are having trouble finding certain fields like "Component Name" when building a custom report.

Here's how you can approach solving this, understanding the limitations and possibilities within OpenManage Enterprise for custom reports:

Understanding the Challenge: Standard vs. Custom Reports

The key issue you're facing is that not all fields available in a pre-defined "standard" report (like "Firmware Compliance per Component Report") are directly exposed as selectable columns in the generic "Report Builder" for custom reports. Standard reports often pull data from specific, pre-aggregated views or tables that are optimized for their particular purpose.

How to Address the Missing "Component Name" (and similar fields):

 * Identify the Report Category:

   * In your first screenshot (Report Builder), under "Category," it's set to "Devices." This category primarily focuses on device-level information.

   * The "Firmware Compliance per Component Report" clearly goes deeper, focusing on components within devices. This suggests a different underlying data structure or category might be needed.

 * Explore Other Categories in Report Builder:

   * The most likely solution is that "Component Name" and related firmware compliance details reside under a different "Category" in the Report Builder.

   * Action: When you are in the "Report Builder," click on the dropdown for "Category" (currently showing "Devices"). Look for categories that are related to:

     * Firmware: There might be a "Firmware" or "Firmware Compliance" category.

     * Components: A "Components" or "Hardware Components" category.

     * Compliance: A more general "Compliance" category, though less likely to contain component-specific names.

 * Investigate Available Columns within Relevant Categories:

   * Once you've selected a potentially relevant category (e.g., "Firmware" or "Components"), then look at the "Select Columns" section. You should then be able to find fields like:

     * Component Name

     * Current Version

     * Available Version

     * Status

     * Baseline

     * These are the fields from your "Firmware Compliance per Component Report."

 * Combining Device and Component Information (If Necessary):

   * If you find component-specific fields in one category and need device-level details (like "Device Name," "Device Identifier," "Device Type," "Device Model") that are only available in the "Devices" category, you might not be able to combine them directly into a single custom report within the OpenManage Enterprise custom report builder's GUI.

   * Workaround/Advanced Method:

     * Export and Combine: Create two separate custom reports:

       * One focusing on device details (using the "Devices" category).

       * Another focusing on component-level firmware details (using the appropriate firmware/component category).

     * Export both reports (e.g., to CSV, as your standard report shows).

     * Use a spreadsheet program (like Excel) or a scripting language (like Python) to combine the data from these two CSV files using a common identifier (e.g., "Device Name" or "Device Identifier") to merge the information.

Step-by-Step for Creating the Custom Report (with the assumption of a "Firmware" or "Component" category):

 * Navigate to Reports: In OpenManage Enterprise, go to Reports.

 * Create New Report: Click on Create Report or a similar option to start a new custom report.

 * Report Definition:

   * Provide a "Name and Description" for your report (e.g., "Custom Firmware Compliance Report").

 * Report Builder (Step 1):

   * Category: This is the most crucial step. Change the "Category" dropdown from "Devices" to a category that deals with firmware or components. Look for options like "Firmware," "Components," "Hardware Compliance," or similar.

   * Device Group: Keep as "All Devices" or select a specific group if desired.

   * Filter (optional): Add any filters if you want to narrow down the results (e.g., by specific device types, compliance status, etc.).

   * Select Columns: Once you've selected the correct category, the "Select Columns" section should populate with fields relevant to that category.

     * Search for and select:

       * Device Name

       * Device Identifier

       * Device Type

       * Device Model

       * Component Name

       * Current Version

       * Available Version

       * Status

       * Baseline

       * And any additional fields you want (e.g., Device Service Tag as shown in your first screenshot).

   * Column Ordering, Ordering, and Sorting: Arrange the selected columns in your desired order and specify sorting preferences.

 * Report Scheduling & Delivery (Step 2 - if applicable):

   * Configure how often you want the report to run (e.g., Weekly SUN at 08:15 AM as per your standard report).

   * Choose the "Format" (e.g., CSV).

   * Specify "To" recipients (email) or "Share Path" for network share delivery.

   * You might also configure "Share Type" (e.g., SMB/CIFS).

Important Note: If, after thoroughly checking all available categories in the Report Builder, you still cannot find "Component Name" or the other firmware-specific fields, it's possible that Dell OpenManage Enterprise's custom report builder simply doesn't expose those granular details directly for custom reports. In such a case, your best option would be the "Export and Combine" workaround mentioned above, or to rely on the existing "Firmware Compliance per Component Report" for those specific details.

Start by carefully exploring the "Category" dropdown in the Report Builder. Good luck!

@Dell-Martin S

Hello Martin,

thank you very much for your detailed answer. Unfortunately, the field "Component Name" cannot be found in any other category. I will try to export and then convert it manually.

Best Regards,

 Marc
