CGEN1008 Error After Upgrade

We recently upgraded from version 4.1 to 4.3, then to 4.5 with Dell OME. After doing so, we're getting the following error on many screens:

An error occurred while getting the syslog settings.CGEN1008 - Unable to process the request because an error occurred.Recommended ActionRetry the operation. If the issue persists, contact your system administrator.

This is just an example when trying to edit syslog server settings. From some general research, it seems this may be certificate related. We are using our own certificate signed by an internal CA. We have two other OME instances that we are running with no problems and the same certificate process (certificates setup the same way and the whole chain uploaded). The only major difference with this OME instance is that it started its life long ago as version 3.x, and we went through the process to upgrade to 4 (no problems doing this, none of these errors), and only recently tried to bring it up to current from 4.1 and then ran into this.

Any insights would be helpful. If we need to open up a support ticket, would be happy to, but it's not very obvious how to open a support ticket just for Dell OME (only our supported hardware products).

Thanks.

Hi,

Might be that can help. If you haven’t uploaded a cert chain yet, you can bypass it by using a self-signed cert during migration. Here’s what worked for us:

Method to Bypass the Certificate Chain Requirement for OpenManage Enterprise Migration | Dell US

  1. Backup your current OME (v3.10.x).
  2. Shut it down.
  3. Spin up a new OME instance (same version), same IP/hostname if needed.
  4. Reinstall any plugins you had before.
  5. Restore the backup.
  6. Go to Backup/Restore > Migrate, and in Step 1, choose “Proceed with self-signed certificate.”

Then on the target OME (v4.x):

  1. Start the Migrate In process.
  2. Again, choose “Proceed with self-signed certificate.”

After migration, you can upload your CA-signed cert without issues. This helped us avoid CGEN1008 errors and UI glitches like blank device pages.

Hope it helps!

Hello,

You could contact Dell Support directly and give a server service tag under warranty that you may be managing in OME and you can get to a technician that can do a remote support with you to work the issue.

With CGEN1008 error in OpenManage Enterprise (OME) 4.5 is could be triggered by issues related to the certificate chain used during migration or secure operations such as syslog configuration.

Try these steps:

Regenerate CSR from OME Web UI

  • Navigate to Application Settings > Security > Certificates
  • Generate a new CSR and use it to request a certificate from your internal CA.

Ensure Full Certificate Chain

  • Concatenate the server certificate, intermediate CA, and root CA into a single .pem file.
  • Upload via Application Settings > Security > Certificates

Verify Certificate Attributes

  • Use tools like openssl to inspect the certificate:
*openssl x509 -in cert.pem -text -noout*
  • Confirm presence of:
    • Key Usage: Digital Signature, Key Encipherment
    • Extended Key Usage: TLS Web Server Authentication, TLS Web Client Authentication

Avoid Reusing Certificates Across Appliances

  • Each OME instance must have its own certificate generated from its own CSR.

Charles,

This is basically the exact process I already did to request a new certificate. I did this process separately (no certificate reuse) with three total instances of OME, but this one instance is the only one having problems (and is the only one which started life as a 3.x OME instance). The other two servers were stood up as 4.x instances. I'm wondering if something held over from the 3.x to 4.x migration is causing the problems with this server.

I'll see about opening up a ticket with support as my next steps.

Thanks.

We have the same problem.

The certificate worked before on version 4.4 .

After the upgrade, a lot of errors on different menus. Also, the device property page is blank for all devices. New certificates uploads are always failing.

I had to roll back to version 4.4.

I think a solution would be to enable a self-signed certificate on OME before the upgrade and install the CA signed certificate after.
But going back to self-signed certificate is not possible in OME.

Please keep us updated if you got any solution.
