Data Domain and vSAN Deduplication and Compression together

Data Domain DD9300 expanded configuration, Data Domain OS 6.1.2.10-603959

VxRail P470F

VMware ESXi 6.5.0

vSAN 6.6.1

Does anyone know how Deduplication and Compression work when they're enabled on both vSAN and DD? How can a deduplicated and Compressed block at the disk group level in vSAN be deduplicated in segments and Compressed again in the Data Domain system?

I haven't been able to find any documentation related to this info and the best practice around the capacity saving feature when both systems (vSAN and DD) provide them.

vSAN deduplication and compression does not affect or interact with Data Domain deduplication. When you take a backup, backup software would read blocks in original (inflated) format and transfer them to Data Domain for deduplication, which will in turn process them using its own algorithm.

That makes sense. Thanks for your response.

By the way, VEEAM is our backup solution and we use DDBoost with our Data Domain.
