Mapping to VMware Clusters

Is it possible to map volumes to more than one cluster without possibly corrupting data? We currently have 5 volumes that are mapped to our cluster of 5 ESXi hosts.  We are adding 2 more hosts, so added another cluster for those hosts.  I was wondering if I could map those 5 volumes to both clusters, or do I need to create all new volumes for the new cluster?

Thanks for your help!

Hello, jyoung709.

So, basically mapping a volume to 2 different clusters would the same as mapping to 2 hosts not in a cluster. It would result in corruption. The beauty in clustering is that there is a 'moderator' (if you will) that manages when a read or write hits a disk. The hosts in the cluster are managed by the software that allows them to 'take turns' so to say, so there is not simultaneous writing. (this is a crude explanation, but serves the purpose)

In your scenario, each cluster is unaware of the other, and is not managed by said moderator. If there were a 'cluster management system' for the clusters? ...sure. but, I have my doubts that it's out there.

I hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any questions.
