Compellent Replay Manager and VSS
Hi all,
I'm a new Replay Manager User and I'm trying to test it in and sandbox environnement.
I've installed Replay Manager Services 7.0 on a Windows 2003 R2 x64 physical server and tried to schedule Consistent replays from the Replay Manager Management Tools --> All work perfectly.
But this server is also backed up by our Corporate Backup Tool : Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3. I've noticed that each time a VSS backup is initiated by BackupExec, a consistent replay is done on the Compellent. Is it a normal operation ? Can we disable this behaviour ?
Thanks in advance,
regards.
Teo.

Finally, I got the solution :
Symantec Backup Exec Agent installed on the windows system has a default parameter to choose the right VSS provider : this parameter is "automatic selection".
With this automatic selection, the agent chooses the Compellent Replay service VSS provider instead of the microsoft VSS provider. And so, running the backup exec job triggers a replay on the Compellent storage system !
Solution : modify the job parameter to force "Microsoft VSS Provider" instead of "automatic selection".

It has always been my experience, based on the limitations of Windows 2003 VSS, that you may only use ONE tool to do this type of backup at a time. There are registry settings you can hack to prevent the wrong VSS provider from being called - but I dont recommend it. Usually we mount the replay to the backup server to get it off to tape and let the Compellent Replay Manager handle the actual taking of the snapshot. Watch out for data corruption with your configuration.
