Newb questions: CX-4PDAE initial setup

Hi,

I'm looking to do some performance testing/troubleshooting with disk i/o and databases, and need a small array to learn on.  I was looking to purchase a CX-4PDAE off of ebay and was wondering if I can hook up an hba card directly to one of the controllers on a cx-4pdae as described below. Can I configure the array directly from the controller, or will I need to load the Flare OS or any other software.  Just looking for a little direction.

Sorry for all the newb questions.

Thanks

that's just a shelf without any "brains" . You need something that has storage processors:

you also need to consider how you are going to connect your servers to this array,  probably the cheapest option would be to get an array that supports iSCSI. If you buy one that is all FC then you will need to buy HBA for your servers. It does become an expensive lab really fast.

Hi,

Thanks again for your help.  I am trying to learn how to troubleshoot performance issues with sql server and wanted to setup an array with different drive configurations to see how I could increase/degrade performance.  I was trying to find an array setup for less than 500 on ebay which is looking more and more difficult.

thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for your response.  I thought the two 100-561-803 in the back were the controller/processor/brains.  This home lab experiment definently got more expensive I take they are just controllers, and I also need the storage processors.  Are storage proccessors ever built in or are they usually some 1u size unit.  Once again, sorry for the newb questions.

thanks

Hi,

I am just looking to hook it up to one server so would only need one hba card.  Are there any older model arrays that would have everything built in?

thanks
