LUN Migration can't find LUN - LUN creation only on SPA possible

Hello,

today I want to increase the size of a RG LUN (no META) currently size of 500GB (owner SPB) to 750GB and try to take LUN Migration like several times bevor but can't choose the new created LUN. After check both LUN properties I found out that the LUN owner (destination LUN owned by SPA) are different. I try to created another LUN which is owned by SPB but SPB is shown greyed. CX4-120 Flare 4.30.000.5.524. LUN Quantity about 40.

Somebody knows this Issue?

many thanks in advance

You can't change it. The VNX operating system makes that decision for you.

All LUNs on a NL-SAS RG will have the same SP owner. If you create a separate NL-SAS RG then the other SP will own those LUNs.

Please refer to the KB "What are the restrictions for LUN migration?" https://support.emc.com/kb/8558 to check your source and destination LUNs first. For example,

If migrating to a larger-size LUN:

  • All SAN Copy sessions must be stopped and all the copy descriptors for the LUN must be destroyed.
  • The remote LUN may be migrated at any time.

For destination LUN, the LUN must NOT be:

  • A private FLARE LUN
  • Smaller than the source LUN
  • In a Storage Group
  • In use by any of the layered drivers within its driver stack
  • Expanding

BTW, what do you mean by "SPB is shown greyed"? Is fault LED on?

Hello Roger,

Thx for your answer, I checked the restrictions but find a hit.

please look at the screenshot - SPB is shown greyed - I try to change the LUN Owner for the new created LUN from SPA to SPB but changes are not shown. Fault LED isn't ON.

Is the LUN created on power saving NL-SAS drives? If that's the case you cannot choose an SP owner; Flare does it for you.

That makes sense as well. I think your question is answered at this point.

You will see that all LUNs on that RG are owned by the same SP. That's recommended and that's why it is grayed out.

Thx, yes answered but not solved.

How I can change SP owner of SATA based LUNs? To change SP owner doesn't work!?

Hello Ernes,

checked, power saving is disabled for SATA drives,

your valuation was helpful, it is possible to choose between SPA and SPB if a LUN will be created on FC drive base. But not with SATA drives.

Thx for your help Ernes,

bad news but good to know, I will choose a different way to increase the volume space.

Was your question answered correctly? If so, please remember to mark your question Answered when you get the correct answer and award points to the person providing the answer. This helps others searching for a similar issue.

You could use metaLUN Concatenated (not Stripped if using a LUN from the same raid group). You could create a new 250GB LUN in the same raid group as the source LUN and use metaLUN concatenated. Or if you have extra space in the same raid group as the source LUN, you could use LUN Migration.
