Disk In A "Requested Bypass" State On CX340
Hello,
I have two bad disks in my CX3-40. One disk shows up as removed, the other is in requested bypass state. What does requested bypass mean?
Thanks.

If I recall correctly, “removed” typically means the drive is failed and offline. “Requested Bypass” happens when the drive has many errors and a proactive sparing copy is internally requested.
Also, if you have configured email or SNMP monitoring from the array you will usually get 2 emails for a single drive failure. One will be “CRU Removed (or Shutdown)” which is the alert for the failed disk, and a second one will be “Unit Shutdown” which is the hot spare stepping in.

"Requested Bypass" means that the disk is dead. The Operating system of the array i.e the Flare is not able to communicate with the drive and cannot supply any information about its condition.
This disk will soon start the sparing to the hot spare if the hot spare has sufficient space.
Please contact EMC support soon, provide the collects and if required EMC will dispatch the new drives to your location soon.
Thanks

In other words, the disk goes completely dead before FLARE has a chance to remove it?

No it will spare to the hot spare available. It should be replaced manually.
