2 Disk Raid 1/0 Raid Group Question.

We recently did some reorganizing of our Raid Groups and I have 2 600GB FC drives left over.  (CX4-960)  Since it seems a shame to let them sit there, I've figure may as well create a RAID group and let our ESX farm use it.

The strange thing is, if I create a RAID 1 or RAID 1/0 raid group, the usable storage reported by Navisphere is 1073GB.  I would expect it to be half that, at 536GB.

Does anybody have an idea as to why this is?  I just can't wrap my brain around it and want to be sure the Raid Group is acutally raid protected.

Thanks!

Create a LUN on it (1GB LUN for example) and then take a look at the usable size

That was it.  Once I created a LUN, the numbers changed and looked more sane.

Exactly. Although you can set the RAID level at the time of creation the capacity will then be the sum of all drives. When you actually create your first LUN, you'll have to set the RAID level again (or this LUN will pick it up from the RAID group) and then the real capacity will be shown. Confusing? Yes, I agree!

Also, always make a RAID1/0 group of it. RAID1 groups cannot be expanded. If you make a RAID1/0 out of it, you would be able to expand it in the future once you bought a couple of extra drives
