Hi
Does any one know how to reduce a pool size, i mean, I have a dctm pool with 16896GB of Quota, but it is a static pool and i need space for another pools
is it possible to reduce its size for example up to 5096GB, due to the uses space is 2466GB.
Could you tell me the steps to do that?
Config# show pool capacity

Hi
Your pool is a virtual pool and thus also your quota does not really reserver space in the system. Your other pool could grow unless you don't have physical capacity (available capacity in show capacity availability) anymore.
In case you want to change your pool quota you find an example below from a CentraStar 4.1 system. The Hard Quota would not be applicable if your are running someting prior to 4.1. As said it's a virtual pools only and if you are on a release prior to 4.1 your application can continue to write unless the admin removes the write capability. With 4.1 the application would receive an error if the hard quota has been achieved.
Config# update pool access nr1
Pool Name [nr1]:
Pool Mask [rdqe-cw-]:
Pool Quota Alert [infinite]:
Pool Quota Hard Stop [infinite]:
Issue the command?
(yes, no) [no]:

CentraStar 4.1 introduced hard quotas for pool quotas. Previous CentraStar releases use soft pool quotas meaning that you can continue to write to the pool past the defined quota. These quotas are not reserved capacity thus one pool's quota should have no impact on available capacity for another pool.
Holger showed the steps to change the quota

That is different and has nothing to do with pool quotas. Your Centera is near capacity so here's your options.
1) Run GCii - This will reclaim any capacity used by orphans. Orphans are blobs that exist without any clips referencing them and are created when clips are deleted.
2) Delete clips from the pool
3) If you do #2, then follow up by running #1
4) Open a SR with EMC Centera Support to see of the upported object count can be decreased. This will reduce capacity that is reserved for system buffers and create additional capacity that you can use. Note that this is generally a one time adjustment.
5) Add additional capacity
Centera does not like being 100% full as this can impact some self healing tasks etc so please try to avoid filling the box.
CLI command "chow capacity avail" will show you the current available capacity. Once you fill the box, you will come to a complete halt and no further ingest will be possible.

Hi
I absolutely support the statements of Dennis. Free up capacity by GC, deletions or decreasing the object count. An additional step might be to check the regeneration buffer. If it is at something higher than 1 disk per cube reduce it to 1 disk per cube.
Available Capacity of less than 4 % is something you do not want to end up with. The corresponding Capacity Alerts were sent out from Centera. Adding more capacity is the solution to your problem. Replacing older systems with new ones and migrating your existing data could also be a solution depending on age and maintenance/warranty situation of the systems.
Monitoring capacity utilization and growth is something everyone needs to do even if the Sales guy told everybody that Centera is a black box and you do not need to do anything with it. We provide Managed Centera Services and would have told you 18 months bevore you reach either capacity or object count limit that you could plan well in advance. If you want to test drive our software supported managed services let me know on holger.jakob@informatio.ch.
Best regards, Holger
