Does NS4-120 support FAST VP?
I have 2 x NS4-120.
CX4-120 at the backend with FLARE 30 running.
Data Movers with this running DART 6.0.
I am thinking about turning on FAST VP [Fully Automated Storage Tiering] on my arrays.
I am running FLARE 30 so I know its supported if I license it.
I can then create a tiered pool – FC + ATA for example – and FAST will move data from tier to tier as needed. All very efficient.
Question – I read that if I want to do this with FILE data that it is only supported on VNX and not the NS/CX?
Is this correct?
What I want to be able to do is create a FAST Pool with my FC+ATA.
Create LUN’s from this FAST pool.
Present these LUN's to teh Data Movers.
Create File Fystems on these LUN’s.
Share them out CIFS/NFS
Then, i want teh data to be tiered away over time based on usage with FAST VP.
Why do I want to do this – because it’s very efficient. Most of users data has an old profile and would be tiered towards the ATA side of the house.
In the document I have, it specifically singles out VNX as capable of this, but not the NS/CX4.
In my (simple) mind this should work.
So, does it work?
Or just not supported?
Why doesn't it work - if FAST works on Block data, what is the difference for File data?
Thank You.

with CX4 you cant use FAST tiered LUNs for NAS data
Reason is that AVM doesnt understand the disk/raid type that is reported for them.
So it isnt going to diskmark them and you can use them.
With VNX LUNs on pools that have FAST VP enabled will be reported as type MIXED and AVM handles them appropriately.

Thank You Rainer.
I appreciate your reply.
It is indeed disappointing news.
You don't know if it is possible to change this with a release of FLARE, or is it more deep rooted than that and more embedded?
It is something that can be retro-fitted back to the CX4 from VNX?

It is not Flare that would need to be changed – its DART
I suggest you ask through your local EMC TC
AFAIK its not planned.
