Cifs storage allocation
If we use one lun in a storage pool (disk group) for cifs storage, does that mean that any other luns in that storage pool must also be used for cifs storage and are not available for other uses?

SAN
You can provide SAN access to CLARiiON LUNS within a single CLARiiON Raid Group (4 + 1). In your case (2), one for the Celerra and one for VMware.
NAS
You can also use the same Celerra Storage Pool for different file systems, for CIFS.NFS access and/or iSCSI targets. VMware would access Celerra storage via the network from one of these protocols.
Note for Celerra Control LUNS
In any case, best practices say that the Celerra Control LUNS are usually bound to a Raid Group that will have only Celerra bound data LUNS and not data LUNS for other hosts.

Yes, I am talking about storage pools (which I believe are disk groups) on the celerra. We have a celerra NS120 attached to a Clariion SAN. We have several disk groups set up. So far, the disk groups that have been used for the CIFS shares on the celerra have been dedicated CIFS storage. When I add a new disk group, I only want to use part of that space for the CIFS storage. Can I use the rest as storage for a VM?

You can share a Raid Group (or storage pool) between NAS and SAN as long as this is not the Raid Group holding the NAS Control LUNs
The NAS Control Luns are 11gb (2 of them) 2gb (4 of them) and 32gb (one). The usually reside on Raid Group #0

are you talking about storage pools on Celerra ? You can use the same pool for file systems that could be used for CIFS , NFS or iSCSI.

disk groups arent a Celerra concept - are you sure you dont mean Clariion raidgroups ?
you can technically mix NAS (CIFS,NFS) and SAN (FC) LUNs within but it is best-practice to not mix

I have one celerra storage pool (group of 4+1 disks) with 2 luns. I have one of these luns dedicated to our cifs server. I want to use the second lun for vmware storage. Is that a support configuration.

But do keep in mind that for performance sake and Celerra's use of it's Automatic Volume Management, allocating two equal sized LUNS in the Raid Group to the Celerra would be best practice.

Thank you all for your assistance. I've been pouring over documentation but it just hasn't been all that clear. This has been a great help.
