New avamar grid stood up to backup only to DD

We have a client that stood up a 3 node avamar grid with a attached DD.

And all backups are going to goto the DD...

I just can't wrap my head around this one.

Is there any documentation out there that would explain why this is done?

Thanks...

The main reason I've seen for using a multi-node grid instead of a single node grid when all the backup data is going to DD is that the session count limits on the single node server might be too low. Three times the node count gives you three times the number of concurrent sessions.

Also, some plugins do not yet support the Data Domain back-end only support the Data Domain back-end in version 7.0 SP1 -- the VSS System State plug-in is the main one.

VSS plugin to DD isn't supported?  Even on avamar v7?

Thanks....

Let me double-check that. I may be confusing versions.

Oh, and file metadata is still sent to the Avamar server for Avamar / Data Domain integrated filesystem backups. On average, there will be about three orders of magnitude more file data than file metadata but this can still add up, especially if the Data Domain system has a lot of capacity.

Looks like this was added to 7.0 SP1. From the Avamar Compatibility and Interoperability Matrix:

Support for Windows System State, Windows Scale Out File Servers over CSV and Windows Active/Passive Cluster over SMB-3 to Data Domain are supported on using Avamar Client v7.0SP1 and later.

I'm going to try and track down documentation for this type of config...

Thanks!
