m15 R7, fan spooling up and down at idle

Alienware m15 R7

Alienware m15 R7

At idle, under balanced or quiet profile in AWCC, the fans on the laptop both spool up and down very quickly, in little spurts every 3-5 seconds. Is this normal behavior? Does anyone have this issue too? It gets a little annoying or distracting, the laptop is just idling with no load, temps are all fine, but the left and right fans constantly spool up and down (very short spurts).

Confirmed it was defective hardware. I don't know what component it was, but I returned the laptop and bought another unit that does not have this issue. FYI: This behavior was present even after a clean install of Windows 11, reinstalling AWCC, etc. Must be a bad board or something as stated in the reddit post with this issue. Just wanted to update this post in case anyone was having this issue, file a claim or exchange it.

We have the same problem. The annoying part is the beeping sound coming from the fans. I don't know if this is normal with the m15 r7

Diagnostic test showed everything passed. I don't think anything is broken and beginning of think this is how it's designed.

I am going to run the diagnostics test now and report results afterwards. Anyways, the processes don't show anything unusual. It shows less than 3% CPU usage, anything from 0.1-3% bouncing back and forth between Microsoft defender and Dell's application processes. The fan doesn't go 0%-100% in a split second mind you. It ramps up maybe 0-5% to 0%, really quickly, like in half a second. But it keeps doing that constantly and randomly, so it makes a little "whistle" over and over again. I'm not sure if I'm describing it correctly... maybe an audio recording will make more sense.

Hi @AimerX welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum.

Alienware m15 R7 POST (Power on Self-Test) will briefly spin up the fans and give diagnostic led lights if they have a known fault.

If there is a fan beeping sound, it seems likely that there is dust/debris on the fan blades and/or in the air exit vents. But the Alienware m15 R7 is relatively new. Please Remove the base cover and try to determine the source of the beeping sound. It could be coil noise coming from electrical parts on the system board (aka motherboard). The fix would be to replace the system board.

I found someone else with the same issue I'm experiencing. Turns out for him it was a hardware issue. I guess this laptop will be going back to Dell.

Recently I have purchased my Alienware M15 R7 just a few days ago and seem to be having the same problem in which the fans will speed up to around +20% and back to 0% in the span of 1 to 5 seconds and this will go on for a period of time. It will then go about being quiet for a little while but this speeding up and slowing down occurs whenever at random time periods. I have tried to get assistance by using get help now but they seem to be unresponsive. Is there any solution from the users side or does this require technician or a definite exchange of the laptop or even a return as this purchase was made 4 to 5 days ago from typing this. This problem is exactly like described as previous users such as titled - M15 R7 fan spooling up and down at idle and M15 R7 Fan turning on and off with the latter one showing similar pictures as mine on reddit. I would much appreciate if any one has any suggestions and as I am typing this I don't seem to hear the fans turning off and on but can see it on the AWCC

Hello @Fahim8637 : please did you resolve your problem? Did you have your computer repaired or exchanged?

Many thanks for your answer.

Regards from France.

@Fahim8637 Did you find a solution to it?? I have the same problem and cant find any reason for the fans going bonkers and back to chill randomly.

I have this same issue. I assume its some kind of sensor issue. I contacted dell support, but they said it was normal behavior. It is very annoying and Im sure it is reducing the life of the fans.
