m15 R5, which SSD?
l currently want to upgrade my Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5 storage. I am given a choice of either a Dell M.2 PCIe NVME Gen 3x4 Class 35 2230 SSD OR Dell M.2 PCIe NVMe Gen 3x4 Class 40 2280 SSD. I don't know if there's another difference other than the length? Both are compatible per the description. I also have seen that there was issues where these came without heart shields or installation screws. I have no clue which one to get and also does it replace my current drive? Or added to it?
Thanks for your help

Hi @Dpdfuzz thank you for sharing your proposed SSD purchase.
Sorry that my multi-choice option messages are not clear. The Crucial System Advisor database has the most recent tested SSD options (up to 4TB) whereas it is rare for the Dell Documentation SSD Storage options to be updated (stuck at up to 2TB).
If affordable, both SSD slot one and two replacement drives should be a minimum of: -
The SSD slot one replacement (C:) boot drive should be 2TB or more. Example: ultrafast SSD 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 2280 2TB Memory & Storage - MZ-V7S2T0B/AM | Samsung US with 3,500MB/s Seq. Read or similar within your price range.
The SSD slot two new (D:) data drive can be 1TB, 2TB or more. Example: ultrafast SSD 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 2280 2TB Memory & Storage - MZ-V7S2T0B/AM | Samsung US with 3,500MB/s Seq. Read or similar within your price range.
If money no problem, both SSD slot one and two replacement drives, can be the same ultrafast 4TB capacity. Please excuse me for trying to spend your money.

Hi @Dpdfuzz welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum.
The PCIe NVME Gen 3x4 OS (C:) boot drive should be a large capacity ultrafast M.2 2280 SSD card (Dell Class 50+ performance. Best in class PCIe NVMe). Example: SSD 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 2280 2TB Memory & Storage - MZ-V7S2T0B/AM | Samsung US with 3,500MB/s Seq. Read.
Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5 Storage, up to 2TB M.2 2280. NOTE: The performance of the PCIe NVMe Gen4 x4 will be limited to PCIe Gen3 x4 bandwidth on this system.
Alienware m15 R5 | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com up to 4TB M.2 2280.
The M.2 2280 SSD Thermal Shield for Dell Alienware M15 Ryzen Edition R5 is DP/N 26X1Y. Search online for discounted purchase with screws.

Thank you very much for your reply.
In other words are you saying that I need both of these that linked above? And the first one you listed will replace what I currently have as my (C:) boot drive?

Hi @Dpdfuzz thank you for sharing more questions.
What fast or ultrafast SSD is currently installed in the Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5 notebook?
In the opening post, you asked about the difference in Dell SSD Classifications. Dell Class 35 & 40 isn’t any sort of industry standard. You should start by comparing the sequential read/write speeds (MB/s Seq. Read and MB/s Seq Write) with other SSD cards. Then look at the other features that you want to use, such as ability to encrypt SSD just in case the laptop goes missing with your bank account information. Automatic Windows Device Encryption or BitLocker on Dell Computers | Dell US
In the opening post, there is question about replacing the current SSD or adding to storage capacity. Do you want to install a large ultrafast SSD card to improve response of the (C:) boot drive or just a large fast Data storage SSD card or both?

Hello again thank you very much for your reply. According to the System Info I have a BC711 NVMe SK hynix 256GB. I purchased it for my son. He quite often complains " Dad, I can only fit a few games on here... There's no way I'll be able to play GTAv"... That's my dilemma and I am aware the amount of storage that game requires. This is all im trying to do for him without breaking the bank. I hope that helps.

Hi @Dpdfuzz thank you for sharing update.
The ultrafast M.2 2280 SSD PC/BC711 NVMe SK hynix storage capacity range is 256GB to 1TB.
The first slot M.2 2280 SSD (C:) boot drive should be 2TB or more. This should have plenty of empty space so that all the gaming temporary files can be quickly unpacked and used.
The second slot M.2 2280 SSD should be used for DATA storage and have personal files, etc. that are not required to be on the (C:) boot drive. (All applications must be installed on the boot drive, not the Data drive.)
Is the SSD 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 2280 2TB Memory & Storage - MZ-V7S2T0B/AM | Samsung US with 3,500MB/s Seq. Read or similar within your price range? Especially now that black Friday deals are available this week?

Apologies! Truly! One further question.
What would the difference be in the
SSD 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 2280 2TB Memory & Storage
models#
MZ-V7S1T0B/AM and MZ-V7S1T0. I know you specified the first model #. I'm just noticing the latter is cheaper.

Hi @Dpdfuzz thank you for sharing request for comparison.
It is always prudent to get a discounted purchase and look at best deals for 2022 on the internet. The Samsung 970 Evo Plus is repeatedly voted best in its class. There are other evolving contenders.
Not sure about the technical difference. It may be promotional, regional and/or vendor price difference where they are sold (Canada versus USA).
Here is an online 1TB comparison Samsung 970 EVO Plus MZ-V7S1T0 vs Samsung 970 EVO Plus MZ-V7S1T0BW | ⿻ Full Comparison (productz.com...

I was hoping to ask right off this thread prior to the install.
I recieved both my SSDs one to replace the C boot drive and a second actually smaller one. One 2TB and the second a 1TB. (Couldn't quite afford both as 2TBs. My current is a 256G. There are actually maybe just a few downloads from steam and that's it. Nothing else besides all the original program files. My question: is there a way for me to back up everything to a cloud or do I need a flash drive to back up my C drive prior to install. Thanks

If you plan to perform a clean install of Windows, then you need to backup your user data/files. You can do that to a cloud service or to an external hard drive or flash drive. If you buy an external drive interface or enclosure, you could even connect the new 1 TB drive to it and backup to that. And of course you will still have your original drive containing the data.
If you want to perform what people here call a "clone" of your current drive to the new 2 TB OS drive, you can do that. The safest way to do it is to create a full disk image of the current OS drive to an external drive. Next, remove the OS drive and install the new 2 TB drive. Then, restore the disk image to the 2 TB drive.
Whatever you do, do not have both the old OS drive and the new OS drive in the laptop at the same time until you boot from the new OS drive.

Thank you for this... I created a disk image backup to an external hard drive. Installed my 2TB drive in slot 1(replacing the old 256g OS Drive), and the 1TB in slot 2.
I haven't booted it up yet. I just want to make sure I'm doing it incorrectly.
How do I restore the disk image to the 2 TB drive once I boot up? Thank you!

Hi @Dpdfuzz thank you for sharing update.
Use Macrium Software | Reflect Free Edition or the free cloning software that came with the new 2TB drive and install this software onto the 256GB OS boot drive in slot 1.
Please install 2TB drive in slot 2 and clone (copy) the 256GB OS boot drive in slot 1 to the slot 2 drive. Then install the 2TB drive in slot 1 as your new OS boot drive. Then install 1TB DATA drive in slot 2.
Your disaster Recovery Plan should include creation of a standby OS boot drive to swap in within minutes, which could be your existing old 256GB OS boot drive when working to a budget.

Good. A full disk image backup is much safer than cloning.
Now that you've installed the new SSD in the primary slot, you would boot from the recovery environment of whatever imaging tool you used (Acronis? Macrium?). You would boot from their recovery environment on USB flash drive or even CD/DVD. Within that environment, you would restore the disk image backup from the external hard drive to the new primary SSD.
As the drive size differs, there are options within the recovery environment to alter the partition size on the new drive. Even if you missed that step, you can always change partitions after booting to Windows.
