18 R1, CPU upgrade help

Alienware 18

Alienware 18

Hello everyone,

I own an Alienware 18 (ALW18-3006sLV). Is it possible to upgrade the CPU in this model with an Intel Core i7-4940MX (SR1PP)? I bought one and once installed all I got is a 7 beep code. Machine works fine with the current CPU (i7-4900MQ), so the motherboard is ok. The laptop is running under A15 BIOS. Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance, this is driving me nuts.

No, it should be plug and play. The 4940 was offered with the 18 when purchased from Dell so there shouldn't be any issues dropping one in.

Hello, yes that CPU works perfectly fine in the 18. It sounds like the CPU is faulty if you're getting 7 beeps.

The 4900 and 4940 are very similar. The only real reason to upgrade is if you want to do serious overclocking as it's fully unlocked.

Hello mattyb3,

I was hoping I just missed some detail. It is so frustrating to buy parts overseas and they arrive in faulty condition.

Just to make sure, there is no BIOS setting or anything I should modify/check before installing the 4940?

Thank you for taking the time to read and help.

OK, I'll get another CPU. I also just found a MXM to M.2 NVMe and I will jump from mSATA to NVMe in the AW18. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks!
