If it were the GPU then it should also show the error on an external monitor. It's possible that the display cable to the internal monitor is damaged or loose. If it were me, I'd take the laptop apart to check. I'd also check the connection of the cable into the back of the display.
If you do decide to try this yourself, take you time and read the service manual carefully. One wrong move can cause some serious issues. I have worked on many laptops though so I have had some practice.
